Deontay Wilder vs Malik Scott preview March 15
American heavyweight prospects Deontay Wilder and Malik Scott will meet this Saturday, March 15 in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. The scheduled 12-round bout can be seen on the Showtime network in America and on super Channel in Canada. Wilder is known for his punching power and being the only American to win a medal at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China.
Wilder will be stepping up in class when he takes on Scott, even though Scott was beaten two fights ago by a controversial six-round TKO to Britain’s Dereck Chisora last July. In fact, it was Scott’s first and only loss as a pro. Wilder took on a former world champion in Serhei Liakhovich last August and stopped him in the first round, but Liakhovich is definitely past his prime these days.
The 33-year-old Scott will enter the ring with an impressive mark of 36-1-1 along with 13 Kos to his name. He’s 6-feet-4-inches tall and usually weighs in for his bouts at about 230 lbs. He hails from Philadelphia and is quite underrated. He’s mobile and has a good jab as well as the Philadelphia attitude to go along with his boxing skills.
Scott was doing well against Chisora until he was dropped in the sixth round. He got up and beat the count, but the referee claimed he was down for the 10 count. Scott was on his knee while waiting for the referee to reach the count of nine, but that proved to be a huge mistake as the bout was called off when he rose to his feet. The draw on Scott’s record came February of last year in a contest with Vyacheslav Glazkov in a fight many believed he won. He had to settle for a split decision draw though.
The 28-year-old Wilder of Tuscaloosa, Alabama is undefeated so far in his pro career with a perfect record of 30-0 with all 30 fights being won by stoppage. He’s tall and wiry as he stands 6-foot-7 and usually weighs in around 215 lbs. He’s got decent boxing skills and speed, but it’s obvious by looking at his record that Wilder’s a guy with tremendous power.
Since Scott is still in his prime this should be a legitimate test for Wilder. Scott prefers to box rather than brawl while Wilder depends in his power to win fights for him. Scott’s movement and jab could frustrate Wilder and earn him some rounds on points, but the big question is how he will react when getting nailed head on by one of Wilder’s power punches.
Scott has average power so it may be a tough task keeping Wilder off of him. If he can take a punch though it’s going to be an interesting contest.

Prediction
Wilder will attempt to control the distance with his height advantage and will try to land his power shots whenever he sees the opportunity. Scott should be able to box his way out of trouble for a few rounds and use his experience. He should also succeed in frustrating Wilder to a certain degree, but sooner or later he’s going to have to face Wilder’s power. It’s hard to predict what’s going to happen when he does, but since Wilder’s stopped all 30 fighters as a pro let’s assume he’s going to make it 31 sometime after the fourth round.
