The most exciting two minutes in sports are now under a month away. The 2014 Kentucky Derby is set to take place on May 3rd this year at the Churchill Downs Racecourse in Louisville, Kentucky. The horses that will run in this years Derby are not yet set, but the contenders are already beginning to show themselves with horses working hard to get the invite to this years Derby. Early Kentucky Derby Odds

As you can see California Chrome is already a huge favourite to win the Derby this year. California Chrome won both the San Felipe in March and the San Anita Derby in April. The horse is primed to continue this winning streak into the Derby.
Hoppertunity is the second biggest favorite even though the horse is ranked #6 on the leaderboards for the entry into the Derby. This horse finished second to California Chrome at San Anita this week and won the Rebel race at Oakland Park in March. Hoppertunity though finished 4th in late February, which shows it is improving.
Wicked Strong is sitting in third in the contenders points race, but comes in with +800 odds here as well. This horse won the Wood Memorial this week after finishing 3rd the month before. Wicked Strong really hasn’t beat anyone that great yet though so this horse is still a bit of a wild card.
Vicar’s In Trouble at +1200 is second to California Chrome on the contenders leaderboard. The horse won the Louisiana Derby right at the end of March beating Intense Holiday (+1400), who Vicar’s In Trouble had lost to the previous month.
The Kentucky Derby is so hard to predict because the top horses haven’t necessarily raced against each other before the race. For this reason it’s always hard to know how horses will react, and who truly is the strongest of the bunch. But that not knowing is also what makes the Kentucky Derby so much fun to watch. It really is anyone’s race until a horse crosses the finish line.
