Nonito Donaire of the Philippines will enter the ring again on Saturday, May 31 when he takes on Simpiwe Vetyeka of South Africa in an attempt to win the WBA Super World Featherweight Title. The 12-round bout can be seen live on HBO in Canada and the USA from the Venetian Resort in Macau, China. Donaire has slipped in the eyes of many fans lately as he was thoroughly outboxed by Guillermo Rigondeaux of Cuba and then struggled in his rematch against Vic Darchinyan before stopping him in the ninth round. Donaire was behind on all three judges’ scorecards at the time of the win.
Donaire said he’s trained harder for this fight against the 33-year-old Vetyeka than against any other opponent since he knows he needs a big win to get back in the boxing fans’ favour. He’s also motivated by the fact that the fight will be seen live by the huge Asian market. He’s being trained by his father Dodong Donaire Sr. and they’re both taking Vetyeka very seriously.
The 31-year-old Donaire is aiming for seven world championships in seven different weight classes, which would be one less than his fellow countryman Manny Pacquiao, who has managed to win eight different crowns. His first goal is to win all of the featherweight titles before moving up in weight. The champion Vetyeka will enter the ring with a 26-2 record along with 16 Kos to his name. His last fight was a sixth-round stoppage over Chris John in December. Donaire is 32-2 with 21 Kos and his bout against Darchinyan took place in November.
Most boxing fans don’t know an awful lot about Vetyeka, Donaire’s been watching tapes of him and is expecting a pretty tough 12 rounds. Donaire may already be past his prime and he’s got three more titles to go if he can take a featherweight crown as this will be his fourth different weight class championship. That’s a lot of work for him to do and at this stage in his career it’s going to be a very tough task. However, he’s still two years younger than Vetyeka and has plenty of experience in tough title fights.

Prediction
Donaire has an awful lot of power in that left hand of his and he can often land it out of nowhere. Vetyeka appears to be a solid pro and his win over Chris John emphasized that fact. Vetyeka’s career seems to be in the upswing at the moment while Donaire’s has stalled a little. Donaire needs to get back to doing what he does best, which is to use his boxing skills instead of hunting for a knockout. Vetyeka’s not going to be a walk in the park, but Donaire should have enough in the tank to take a decision or late stoppage.
