Joseph Parker vs Solomon Haumono Preview July 21st
Unbeaten heavyweight prospect Joseph Parker of New Zealand squares off against fellow countryman Solomon Haumono of at the Horncastle Arena, in Christchurch, New Zealand on July 21st. The hard-hitting Parker is hoping to add a few more wins to his resume before eventually getting a mandatory world title shot at IBF Heavyweight Champion Anthony Joshua of England. Parker’s last bout was a tough 12-round unanimous decision over Carlos Takam of Cameroon in May. Haumono, who’s also a knockout artist, last fought in April and beat Mauel Alberto Pucheta by a sixth-round stoppage.

The 24-year-old Parker enters the fight with a perfect mark 19-0 with 16 Kos while the 40-year-old Haumono, who’s ranked 12th by the WBA is 24-2-2 and has 21 Kos to his name. By looking at their records, you can see there’s a lot of power between these two boxers. Parker’s current knockout ratio stands at 84 per cent while Haumono’s is 75 per cent. However, on the downside, Haumono is easy to hit and doesn’t have much in the way of speed. But come to think of it, Takam proved that Parker can also be hit as he tagged him numerous times with solid shots in their bout. This did prove that Parker has a solid chin though.
Haumono’s two losses were to American Kevin Johnson by stoppage in the 10th round in April of 2013 and at the hands of Justin Whitehead in 2009 via a 10-round split decision. Haumono definitely has a puncher’s chance and can be a handful if he lands enough solid blows. Parker needs to improve his stamina so he can fight the full three minutes of every round if he has to and he may need another few fights before he’s ready to challenge for a world title. Parker won the WBO Oriental Heavyweight Championship by stopping American Brian Minto in seven rounds back in 2014 and also holds several other regional heavyweight titles in his part of the world.
This fight against Haumono is for the WBO Oriental Title and the OPBF crown. Parker may not be that well known by most North American and British boxing fans, but he’s the top ranked heavyweight in his native New Zealand. He’s faced some decent boxers so far such as Takam, Minto, Marcelo Luiz Nascimento, Kali Meehan, Bowie Tupou, Jason Pettaway, Frans Botha and Sherman Williams. He turned pro back in 2005 and has 80 rounds under his belt since then. He has decent size for a modern-day heavyweight at 6-feet-4-inches in height with a 76-inch reach. The most notable thing about him though is his power.
Haumono gives away two inches in height and reach as he’s 6-foot-2 and has a wingspan of 74 inches. He’s fought 136 rounds since turning pro back in 2000. Haumono’s two draws came against Colin Wilson in 2009 in and eight rounder and Joey Wilson in 2010 in a 10-round bout He’s also beaten Cliff Couser, Sam Hunter and Marcelo Luiz Nascimento in his career. Haumono now resides in Australia and is a well known former NRL (National rugby League) player.
Prediction……
This is a huge matchup down in New Zealand and Australia between two power punchers. Parker is 16 years younger than Haumono, but they both have the power to stop each other. This contest should provide some excitement and fireworks and the man with the best chin and skills should win it, which would be Parker.
Haumono certainly has a puncher’s chance.
