Roy Jones Jr. vs Rodney Moore Preview August 13th
Former multi-weight-division world champion Roy Jones Jr of America will be returning to the ring on Saturday, August 13th when he takes on Rodney Moore in a 10-round cruiserweight bout at the Pensacola Bay Center in Pensacola, Florida. Jones, who is one of the greatest boxers of any era but is now 47 years old, has hung on for too long according to most fans. He says he’ll continue with his career if he beats the 40-year-old Moore. Jones was brutally knocked out in the fourth round by former world champion Enzo Maccarinelli of Wales in Russia last December while Moore lost a six-round unanimous decision to Mike Bissett in February. Jones did stop somebody named Vyron Phillips in Arizona in the second round March in a bout in which Phillips was making his pro debut after winning a contest to take on Jones.

Jones recently received his Russian citizenship from President Vladimir Putin and now spends a great deal of time in his adopted country and coaches and fights there. He’s heading to his hometown this weekend though, just in case it is his last fight. Jones is a former world champion in the middleweight, super-middleweight, light-heavyweight and heavyweight division after kicking off his career as a junior middleweight. In fact, he’s the only boxer in history to capture a heavyweight title after starting out in the 154 lb. division.
Jones will climb into the ring with a record of 63-9 along with 46 Kos while Moore has a mark of 17-11-2 and has just 7 Kos to his name. Jones lost his first fight as a cruiserweight back in May of 2011 against Denis Lebedev via a 10th-round round stoppage with just two seconds to go in the fight. He won eight fights in a row after that until running into former world cruiserweight champion Maccarinelli. Jones stands 5-feet-11-inches tall, has a 74-inch reach and has boxed 467 rounds since turning pro back in 1989. His current knockout ratio stands at 64 per cent.
Jones, a former silver medal winner at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, South Korea, has beaten some of the best boxers of his era such as Jeff Lacy, Omar Sheika, Felix Trinidad, Antonio Tarver, John Ruiz, Clinton Woods, Otis Grant, Virgil Hill, Mike McCallum, Montell Griffin, Vinny Pzienza, James Toney and Bernard Hopkins. His losses have come at the hands of Maccarinelli, Lebedev, Glen Johnson, Bernard Hopkins, Danny Green, Joe Calzaghe, Antonio Tarver (twice) and Montell Griffin by disqualification. Tarver stopped him once as did Johnson, Green, Lebedev and Maccarinelli.
Moore, who hails from Houston, Texas, hasn’t won since 2003 and has lost nine fights in a row since then. He’s faced some recognizable opponents such as Danny Batchelder, Andrey Fedesov, Darnell Wilson, Richard Hall, Donnell Wiggins, George Khalid Jones and Shannon Miller. He’s gone 177 rounds since turning pro in 1996, but has little power with a knockout ratio of just 27 per cent. We’re not sure how big he is since his height and weight are unlisted. He’s pretty tough though as he’s been stopped just once and that was a fifth-round technical decision back in 2001 to Randy Griffin.
Jones still has decent power at this point of his career, but is definitely more known for his speed and excellent skills. However, his chin has really become quite suspect lately, but this hasn’t stopped him from competing. He’s susceptible to knockouts, but Moore possesses little if any power. Jones is certainly the better boxer here and also has more power, but he arguably has a glass chin.
Prediction……
Jones is a Hall of Famer while Moore is basically a professional opponent. But with Jones’ chin being very questionable, there’s always a chance that even a light-hitting boxer such as Moore could do some damage. If Jones chin holds out, he’ll take a comfortable decision or score a late stoppage.
Jones used to be world class while Moore is Grade C, but anything’s possible due to Jones’ chin.
