Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather (41-0, 25 KOs)) will return to the boxing ring on Sept. 17th as he takes on ‘Vicious’ Victor Ortiz (29-2-2 (22Kos) in a highly-anticipated welterweight bout at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Mayweather last fought about 14 months ago when he beat Shane Mosley by a dominant unanimous decision. However, they only fighting he’s been doing since then has been against the American justice system as he’s constantly been in trouble with the law.
The public is intrigued with this fight because Ortiz represents youth, power, and speed, which is something that most of Mayweather’s latest opponents have been lacking. However, Mayweather obviously feels confident heading into the bout and isn’t worried about Ortiz.
In addition, he realizes he’s picked a tough fighter and will gain some added credibility if he beats him. He’ll also take home the WBC Welterweight Championship with a win, which Ortiz won in his last fight by beating Andre Berto in a 12-round thriller.
Ortiz has suddenly become the new poster boy of boxing after the win over Berto even though he quit during his 2009 WBA Jr. Welterweight title fight against Marcos Maidana in Los Angeles. Ortiz and Maidana had dropped each other on several occasions and the fight was shaping up to be a classic, but Ortiz suddenly put a halt to the slugfest in the sixth round after Maidana had sent him crashing to the canvas.
Ortiz had a cut and some swelling around his right eye, but shocked millions of fans when he told the referee he didn’t want to carry on. He then said in the post-fight interview in the ring that he didn’t deserve to take a beating and that’s why he quit. Some fans wrote him off, but Ortiz kept up his entertaining style in his next five fights and recorded three knockouts in them.
His best fight came when he moved up to welterweight though and took on Berto for the WBC title. The 24-year-old Mexican-American entered the ring as the underdog, but displayed excellent determination and courage in the fight. Each boxer was knocked down twice and Ortiz lifted the belt in his first ever fight as a welterweight with a close, unanimous decision.
The undefeated Mayweather is an excellent boxer, but is often too cautious, resulting in fights that are usually lacking in action. He has a solid chin, but Mosley had him hurt in the second round of their fight last year. However, he let him off the hook by not following up, something that Ortiz won’t do. It’s going to be almost impossible for Ortiz to outbox Mayweather, so he’s going to have to hit him hard and often.
Ortiz is a southpaw and that may pose a few minor problems for Mayweather, but Mayweather is quite an intelligent boxer who can easily adapt in the ring. Ortiz will have to use his jab if he’s going to have any success, but he usually concentrates on power shots. This often leaves him open for straight right hands. Ortiz will have to press the action without letting up at all. But even if he does this, it’s still hard to envision the champion keeping his title. Look for Mayweather to stop him anytime after the sixth round.
This is going to be an interesting fight. Watch for the boxing betting lines to move as Saturday approaches.
