Alberto Puello vs Sandor Martin Preview March 1st, 2025

Unbeaten WBC Junior Welterweight boss Alberto Puello of the Dominican Republic defends the belt for the first time this Saturday, March 1st when he battles it out with Spain’s Sandor Martin. The 12-rounder from Brooklyn, New York can be seen live on pay-per-view in most nations. Puello was last in action in June when he edged Gary Antuanne Russell via a split decision to win the interim belt and has since been promoted to full champion. Martin’s last contest resulted in a a fourth-round KO over Mohamed El Marcouchi in December, 2023, so he’s been out of action for over a year.

My Pick
The 30-year-old Puello fights out of Las Vegas, and made his pro debut in 2015 following an amateur career which saw him fight at the 2014 PanAmerican Sports Festival. He’s boxed 164 rounds as a pro and makes the ring walk with a perfect mark of 23-0 with 10 Ko’s. Puello measures 5-feet-9-inches tall and has a 71-inch reach and as far as power goes, he’s a little below average as 43.5 per cent of his wins have been by stoppage and he has gone the distance in his last five fights.
Puello has won the vacant WBA Fedelatin and WBC Latino Super Lightweight Titles as a pro as well as the WBA Interim Belt in 2019 when he beat Jonathan Alonso by unanimous decision. He defended the title against Cristian Coria and Jesus Antonio Rubio but was stripped of the belt when the WBA got rid of its interim titles. He then faced Batyr Akhmedov for the vacant WBA Super Lightweight Championship in August 20, 2022 and won by a split decision in a slugfest. Things turned sour shortly after that however when Puello tested positive for a performance-enhancing substance and was given a six-month suspension in June, 2023.
Martin wasn’t very well known outside of Europe, where he used to be the former European Super Lightweight Champion, until he shocked the boxing world by beating former world champion Mikey Garcia by 10-round majority decision in October, 2021 He certainly made a name for himself in that fight and proved it was no fluke as he followed up with a 10-round unanimous decision win over Jose Felix and then dropped a highly controversial 10-round split decision to Teofimo Lopez in December, 2022 in a shot at the WBO International Super Lightweight Belt.
Martin is a 31-year-old southpaw with an impressive mark of 42-3 with 15 Ko’s and has boxed 294 rounds since making his pro debut in 2011. He also has experience as a kickboxer and stands just over 5-feet-7-inches tall but unfortunately has an unlisted reach. He gives up two inches in height to Puello and doesn’t really possess much in the way of power in his fists either as just 35.7 per cent of his wins have been by stoppage, but he has halted his last two opponents since losing to Lopez.
Martin captured the Spanish Super Lightweight Title in 2014 with a technical decision over Ignacio Mendoza and first captured the European Belt in 2015 via a unanimous decision over Samuele Esposito. He added the WBC Youth Silver Super Lightweight Title in 2015 when he stopped Gyorgy Mizsei in the fourth round. His first pro loss came at the hands of Alexandre Lepelley by an eight-round decision in 2013. He also lost to Anthony Yigit by12-round unanimous decision in 2017 when he lost the European Belt. He regained the vacant title two years later though when he beat Andrea Scarpa after the ninth round.
Prediction…
Both southpaws have little in the way of power but possess fine skills and chins. This fight will likely go the distance and it should be a close affair with some momentum shifts along the way. When all is said and done though I’m expecting Puello to remain undefeated and keep his title by close decision or a draw.
Puello has slightly more power and boxing skill.
