My Pick

Baumgardner is 30 years old, resides in Detroit and makes her ring walk with a mark of 15-1 with 7 Ko’s. She made her pro debut in 2017 and has boxed 76 rounds since. Her lone loss as a pro came to Christine Linardatou by way of an eight-round split decision in July, 2018 when she lost the WBC International Super Featherweight Title. Of course, she avenged that defeat with her unanimous decision over Linardatou in her last outing. Baumgardner had won the vacant belt two fights earlier with an eight-round unanimous decision over Nydia Feliciano. Baumgardner stopped Terri Harper in the fourth round in November, 2021 to win the WBC and IBO Super Featherweight Titles.

She edged Mikaela Mayer by controversial split decision in October, 2022 to add the IBF and WBO Belts and is now riding a nine-fight winning streak. She turned pro after an amateur career which saw her win a silver medal at the 2014 National Golden Gloves as a welterweight and a gold at the 2014 US National Boxing Championships as a lightweight. She stands 5-feet-6-inches tall with an unlisted reach and as far as power goes, she’s far above average in the female version of the sport with a current knockout ratio of 46.7 per cent but has gone the distance in her last four fights and nine of the past 12.

The 39-year-old Persoon climbs through the ropes with a fine mark of 49-3 with 19 Ko’s. She made her pro debut in 2009 and has boxed 357 rounds since. She won a gold medal as an amateur at the 2009 Belgian National Championships and as a pro is a former IBF and WBC Lightweight Champion. Her first loss came at the hands of Zelda Tekin by fourth-round TKO in 2010. She won the vacant European Lightweight Belt in 2011 with a unanimous nod over Nicole Boss.

Persoon was crowned WIBF Lightweight Boss in 2012 when she stopped Lucia Morelli in the fifth round and added the vacant IBF Belt in 2012 when she halted Erin McGowan in the seventh round. She won the WBF and WIBA Belts in 2013 when she stopped Morelli in the 10th round and added the WBC Title in 2014 via a 10-round unanimous decision over Erica Anabella Farias. Persoon held the WBC Belt until 2019 when she dropped a majority decision to Katie Taylor. Her last loss also came to Taylor in their rematch a year later via a unanimous decision.

Persoon has also won the vacant WBC Silver and IBO Inter-Continental Super-Featherweight titles in her career. She measures 5-feet-9-inches tall and also has an unlisted reach so has a three-inch edge in height on Baumgardner. As far as power is concerned, she also has enough of it to do some damage as 38.8 per cent of her victories have come by stoppage but her last stoppage came in 2021 and she’s gone the distance in seven of her last eight fights.

Prediction…

Baumgardner is nine years younger than Persoon and just as powerful. Naturally she doesn’t have the same amount of pro experience as Persoon but she’s beaten some tough opposition. She can’t afford to take Persoon lightly or lose focus during the fight however or Persoon will make her pay for it. However, I believe Baumgardner will get the nod here and retain her titles.

Baumgardner is nine years younger and has decent power.
