- Botirzhon Akhmedov -105
- Oscar Duarte -125
My Pick
The 28-year-old Duarte enters the fight with a mark of 27-2-1 with 22 Ko’s and has fought 146 rounds since turning pro as a teenager back in 2013. He has quite a bit of power in his fists as 81.5 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage including his last 13 in a row. The last time Duarte was taken the distance was by Adrian Estrella over 10 rounds in 2019 with Estrella taking a split decision to capture the vacant WBC Continental Americas Lightweight Title. His second defeat came at the hands of Ryan Garcia last December when he was stopped in the eighth round.
Duarte’s lone draw was a four-round split decision with Roberto Garcia in 2014. At 5-feet-9-inches tall with a 71-inch reach, Duarte has a 1.5-inch height advantage over Akhmedov as well as 2.5-inches in reach. His best wins have come against Diaz, Juan Jose Montes, Rey Perez, former world champion Roger Gutierrez, Nestor Armas Hernandez, Humberto de Santiago and Javier Franco. He also stopped Andres Garcia in the fifth round in 2020 to win the vacant NABF Lightweight Title.
The 33-year-old Akhmedov is a southpaw who fights out of Los Angeles, California and has rounds of experience under his belt since making his pro debut in 2017. He earned a quota spot for 2016 Summer Olympics for Turkey after capturing a bronze medal at the European Boxing Olympic Qualification Tournament in 2016. He measures just over 5-feet-7-inches tall with a 68.5-inch reach and possesses a record of 10-3 with 9 Ko’s.
There’s plenty of power in Akhmedov’s fists as well as 90 per cent of his victories have come by stoppage including his last seven. However his record is just 1-2 in his last three fights. His first defeat came at the hands of Mario Barrios in 2019 when he was dropped in the fourth and 12th rounds and lost a unanimous decision in a shot at the vacant WBA Junior Welterweight Crown. He was then edged by 12-round split decision in 2022 by Alberto Puello in another attempt at the WBA Belt.
His last defeat came to Kenneth Sims Jr by 12-round majority decision in May, 2023. Along the way, Akhmedov has beaten the likes of former world champion Israel Barroso as well as Rey Perez and Argenis Mendez. He’s a fine boxer with power but has seemed to fall just short of the mark when stepping up in competition.
Prediction…
Both boxers have great power but Duarte has been stopped as a pro and Akhmedov has been down on the canvas several times. This has the potential to be a fight-of-the-year candidate if they both decide to let their hands go. I can see this fight going either way really but am giving the slight edge to Akhmedov as I think he’s taken on stiffer opposition as a pro and has a solid amateur background.
Akhmedov has a bit more power than Duarte and possibly a better chin.
