My Pick
The 28-year-old Simpson makes the ring walk with a perfect mark of 16-0 with 11 Ko’s and has boxed 60 rounds since making his pro debut in 2019. He’s a former soccer player who reportedly won 38 of his 53 amateur fights. He’s pretty tall for the 168-lb division as he’s 6-feet-3-inches with a reported 75-inch reach. As far as power goes, Simpson is above average as his current knockout ratio sits at 68.7 per cent and he’s stopped seven of his past 10 opponents.
Simpson didn’t face an opponent with a winning record until his eighth pro fight and his opponents up until then had a combined record of 47-322-6. In fact, that was the combined record of seven of those eight opponents as BoxRec is unsure who Simpson even faced in his seventh bout. Still, Simpson has won all 16 of his bouts with the only recognizable opponents being Woodall, Chelli and Jose de Jesus Macias.
On the other side of the coin, Ahorgah is just 24 years old and carries around a mark of 13-2 with 12 Ko’s and has 53 rounds of pro experience under his belt since turning pro in 2022. Unfortunately there’s no height and reach information for the African so we don’t know how he compares size-wise against Simpson. We do know he may have more power than the champion though as 92.3 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage including his last 11.
In fact, Ahorgah has gone the distance just twice in his career. He beat Charles Lesko Sossiya by a six-round unanimous decision in his second pro contest in 2022 and dropped an eight-round unanimous decision to Obodai Sai in October, 2023. His second loss came in his next outing in January, 2024 when he was stopped in the seventh round by Hassan Mwakinyo in a shot at the vacant WBO African Middleweight Belt.
The two defeats on Ahorgah’s record came against the only two opponents he has faced who entered the ring with winning records. All 13 of his wins have been against boxers who didn’t have a winning record so each time he stepped up in class he failed to make the grade. Ahorgah has fought outside of Ghana just once and that was his loss to Mwakinyo, which took place in Zanzibar.
Prediction…
Simpson took care of Steed Woodall in quick fashion just three weeks ago and is already back in the ring. On paper, Ahorgah has a fine record but his wins have all been against limited opposition. Still, he’s just 24 years old and 12 of his 13 victories have been by stoppage so Simpson would be wise to not overlook him. Ahorgah has a puncher’s chance here and he’s a relative unknown so a win wouldn’t be a huge shock. However I believe Simpson will do enough to earn another win and remain undefeated with the belt around his waist.
Simpson is fighting at home and has faced tougher opposition so far.
