  • Hamzah Sheeraz -280

My Pick

The 30-year-old Adames now fights out of Las Vegas and carries around a record of 24-1 with 18 Ko’s. He’s boxed 127 rounds since making his pro debut in 2015 following a fine amateur career. He competed at the 2013 World Amateur Championships, won a gold medal at the 2012 Pan American Youth Championships, reached the quarterfinals of the 2012 World Youth Championships and won a bronze medal at the 2013 Pan American Championships.

Since turning pro he’s also captured the WBA Fedecaribe, and WBA Fedelatin Welterweight Titles, the NABF, and WBO NABO Super Welterweight Crowns. His lone loss came to Patrick Teixeira via a unanimous decision in November, 2019 in a shot at the interim WBO Super Welterweight Title and was dropped in the seventh round along the way.

Adames hasn’t faced too many other top level boxers up to now other than Gausha, Teixeira and Williams but he did edge Sergiy Derevyanchenko via a 10-round majority decision in December, 2021 and also has wins over Patrick Day, Frank Galarza and Joshua Conley. He stands 5-feet-11-inches tall with a 73-inch reach and has very good power in his punches as 75 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage including seven of his last 10 victories.

As for Sheeraz, he’s just 25 years old and owns a perfect record of 21-0 with 17 Ko’s. He also enjoyed a fine amateur career and has 86 rounds of experience under his belt since turning pro in 2017. He was a three-time finalist at the national junior championships but became disillusioned boxing after being overlooked for the Commonwealth Youth championships. He then took a year off to focus on an electrician’s apprenticeship before being talked back into the ring and turning pro.

It was a wise choice as Sheeraz won the vacant WBO European Super Welterweight Title in 2019 when he stopped Ryan Kelly in the sixth round. He defended the title four times and captured the vacant WBC International Silver Middleweight Belt in 2022 by halting Jez Smith in the second round. Sheeraz added the Commonwealth Middleweight Title in November, 2022 when he stopped River Wilson-Bent in the second round.

Sheeraz is quite big for a middleweight as he measures 6-feet-3-inches tall with a 75-inch reach so is four inches taller than Adames with a two-inch edge in reach. He also carries plenty of power in his fists as his current knockout ratio clocks in at 81 per cent and he’s stopped his last 15 opponents. He’s stepping up in class against Adames but so far his power has been too much for most of his opponents to handle. His also has wins against Austin Williams, Liam Williams and Bradley Skeete.

Prediction…

Adames and Sheeraz are solid boxers with good skills and plenty of power with Sheeraz being five years younger and carrying around a 15-fight knockout streak. He’s also got a good size advantage but lacks experience when it comes to facing upper-level opponents. I’m expecting this to be pretty close for several rounds and it may even last the distance. The key here will be how both boxers’ chins hold out. Sheeraz has the edge in power and size and that should be enough to see him take Adames’ belt this weekend. However if Adames can handle his power it’s going to be a tough task.

Sheeraz is bigger and carries more power.
