Carlos Canizales vs Ivan Garcia Preview July 19th, 2024
Former WBA Light Flyweight Champion Carlos Canizales of Caracas, Venezuela will be battling Ivan Garcia of Mexico for the WBC Silver Light Flyweight Title this Friday, July 19th. The 12-rounder takes place in Canizales’ hometown. Canizales last boxed in January when he dropped a 12-round majority decision to Kenshiro Teraji in Japan in a shot at the WBA Super, and the WBC Light Flyweight Titles. Garcia was last in the ring in April when he beat Pedro Delgado Gaytan by 10-round unanimous decision for the WBA Fedecentro Flyweight Belt.

The 31-year-old Canizales has a record of 26-2-1 with 19 Ko’s. He won the vacant WBA Light Flyweight Title in 2018 with a unanimous decision over Reiya Konishi and defended it against Bin Lu by 12th-round stoppage and Sho Kimura by unanimous decision before losing the belt to Esteban Bermudez when he was stopped in the sixth round in May, 2021. Before losing to Bermudez the only blemish on his record was a 12-round split decision draw with Ryoichi Taguchi on New Year’s Eve, 2016 in an attempt to win Taguchi’s WBA Light Flyweight Crown.
Canizales turned pro in 2014 and has 157 rounds of experience under his belt since. He possesses good power as 73.1 per cent of his victories have come by way of stoppage and but has halted just three of his past nine opponents. The former champion measures 5-feet-3-inches tall with a reach of 64.5 inches. Canizales also won the WBA Fedelatin Light Flyweight Title in October, 2015 with an 11-round split decision over Rober Barrera and also has wins over Ganigan Lopez and Daniel Matellon.
Garcia is just 23 years old and makes the ring walk with a mark of 12-2-1 with 4 Ko’s and he’s boxed 80 rounds since turning pro in 2019 as a teenager. Unfortunately there’s no height and reach information for him so we don’t know how he stacks up size-wise against Canizales. His first pro loss came in 2021 when he was stopped in the fourth round by Yahir Alan Frank Verdugo. He was also halted in 2023 when Luis Cerrito Hernandez took care of him in the third round.
The lone draw on Garcia’s record was a 10-round affair with Rodrigo Ramirez last December in a shot at the WBC International Light Flyweight Title. This will be Garcia’s second fight outside of Mexico but he has fought in Venezuela before when he drew with Ramirez. As far as power goes, He doesn’t possess much of it as just 33.3 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage. He last stopped an opponent seven fights ago when he halted Jose Castro Gerardo in the second round.
Prediction…
Canizales has fine boxing skills to go with his power so this isn’t going to be an easy night for Garcia, who lacks the power to keep the ex-champion at bay. Both are fan-friendly boxers who are at their best when they throw punches in volume but considering his experience and power and the fact that he’s fighting at home, I’m expecting Canizales to leave the ring with another belt this Friday night.
Canizales’ experience, power and skills will be too much for Garcia.
