Chris Colbert vs Nahir Albright Preview August 24th, 2024

Chris Colbert of Brooklyn, New York will step back into the ring this Saturday, August 24th when he takes on Nahir Albright in a 10-round lightweight battle in Albright’s hometown of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Both boxers are trying to get back on track as Colbert was stopped by Jose Valenzuela in the sixth round in December in a rematch after Colbert beat him by a controversial 10-round unanimous decision in March by scores of 95-94 across the board. Albright last boxed in December when he dropped a 10-round majority decision to Keyshawn Davis in a shot at the WBC USA and WBO Inter-Continental Lightweight Titles but the result was changed to a no-contest after Davis tested positive for marijuana.

My Pick

The 27-year-old Colbert carries a record of 17-2 with 6 Ko’s. He earned a shot at the interim WBA Super Featherweight Title by stopping Miguel Beltran Jr in the first round for the vacant NABA-USA Lightweight Title in September, 2019. He then beat former world champion Jezzrel Corrales by unanimous decision for the interim title and defended it by stopping Jaime Arboleda in the 11th round and decisioning Tugstsogt Nyambayar before losing to Hector Luis Garcia by 12-round unanimous decision in February, 2022 for his first pro defeat and was dropped in the seventh round.

Colbert has fought 133 rounds since making his pro debut in 2015 following a fine amateur career. He was the Daily News Golden Gloves champion of New York City in 2014 and won gold at the 2015 National Championships and qualified for the 2016 U.S. Olympic trials. However he decided to turn pro as he believed there was too much politics in the amateurs. Colbert stands 5-feet-8-inches tall with a 71-inch reach with excellent speed and boxing skills.

He owns a decent chin despite being dropped by Garcia and stopped by Valenzuela, but doesn’t have much in the way of one-punch power though as just 35.3 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage. His lack of power hasn’t always been a problem though due to his slick boxing skills but he was thoroughly beaten by both Garcia and Valenzuela and he’s stopped just three of his last nine opponents in Arboleda, Beltran and Mario Briones.

Albright is 28 years old and climbs through the ring ropes with a mark of 16-2 with 7 Ko’s. He turned pro back in 2016 after s good amateur career and has 99 rounds of experience under his belt since. He measures 5-feet-8-inches tall with a 70.5-inch reach so measures the same size as Colbert but gives up a minimal half-inch in reach. When it comes to power, Albright is also below average as 43.7 per cent of his wins have come by way of stoppage and he’s gone the distance in five of his past six outings.

Albright was beaten in his pro debut as he dropped a four-round majority decision to Anthony Lauerano in 2016 and didn’t lose again until February, 2022 when he lost a 10-round unanimous decision to Jamaine Ortiz in a shot at the vacant NABF Lightweight Title. Other than Ortiz, Albright hasn’t really beaten any other recognizable opponents with his biggest wins coming over Carlos Balderas, Michael Dutchover and Estivan Falcao. He also beat Jeremy Hill by eight-round unanimous decision in July, 2021 for the NABA USA Lightweight Title.

Prediction…

Colbert is more mobile than Albright and possesses superior boxing skills and speed but Albright isn’t really far behind him as he showed against Keyshawn Davis. This should be a close fight which could go either way but I think Colbert’s style is a bit more effective though especially if he lets his hands go and his chin holds up.

Colbert just edges Albright when it comes to skill.
