Denis Berinchyk vs Keyshawn Davis Preview Feb. 14th, 2025

Unbeaten WBO Lightweight Champion Denis Berinchyk of Ukraine takes on undefeated former amateur star Keyshawn Davis of Norfolk, Virginia this Friday, Feb. 14th. The 12-rounder from New York City can be seen live in America on the full ESPN platform while fans in the UK and Ireland can catch it on Sky Sports Action and fans in Canada can view it on TSN 2. Davis last fought in November when he stopped Gustavo Lemos in the second round to defend his WBO Inter-Continental, WBC USA, and IBF USBA Lightweight Belts. Berinchyk last boxed in May when he beat Emanuel Navarrete via a split decision to win the vacant WBO World Title. Navarrete is the reigning WBO Super Featherweight Champion who moved up in weight against Berinchyk in an attempt to win a title belt in a fourth weight division.

My Pick

The 36-year-old Berinchyk climbs into the ring with a perfect mark of 19-0 with 9 Ko’s and has boxed 154 rounds since making his pro debut back in 2015. He measures 5-feet-7-inches tall and unfortunately has an unlisted reach. As far as power goes, he’s not considered to be a heavy hitter as his current knockout ratio stands at 47.4 per cent and he has gone the distance in seven of his last nine outings.

Berinchyk enjoyed an extensive and successful amateur career and also fought in the World Series of Boxing. He also represented his homeland at the 2012 Olympics and the 2011 World Championships and won a silver medal at each competition as a light-welterweight. Berinchyk also has experience in professional bare knuckle boxing. He earned a PhD in physical education and sport from the National University of Ukraine and captured a gold medal at the 2010 World University Boxing Championships and a bronze at the 2013 World University Games.

As a pro he’s also won the vacant WBO Oriental Lightweight Title and has defended the WBO International Belt eight times. His biggest wins have been against Navarrete, Anthony Yigit, Yvan Mendy, Isa Chaniev, Jose Sanchez, Nihito Arakawa, Ismael Garcia and Lorenzo Parra so he’s got experience against some good boxers on his record. Perhaps a bit oddly, this will be just his second fight in the United States with the win over Navarrete being his first.

The 25-year-old Davis enters the fight with a perfect record of 12-0 with 8 Ko’s and has fought 80 rounds since making his pro debut in February, 2021. Davis enjoyed a superb amateur career which saw him win silver medals at the 2019 Pan American Games, the 2019 World Championships, and the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan as a lightweight, losing to Cuba’s Andy Cruz in the final of each of those tournaments. Davis stands 5-feet-9-inches tall with a 70-inch reach, so is two inches taller than the champion, and has had no problem adapting to pro boxing as he currently owns a knockout ratio of 66.7 per cent.

The only opponents to go the distance with him so far have been Jose Meza, who went six rounds in May, 2021 but lost every round in a unanimous decision defeat; Juan Carlos Burgos in December, 2022 who also lost every round; Francisco Patera in July, 2023, who went 10 rounds but was dropped in the eighth and managed to win just one round on one judge’s scorecard and Madueno, who won just one round on all three scorecards in July. Nahir Albright also went the full 10 rounds and with Davis and earned a draw with one judge in October, 2023 but that majority-decision win for Davis was changed to a no-contest after he tested positive for marijuana.

Exceptional speed and power are what Davis brings to the ring as he continues his pro career. Understandably, he’s was brought along somewhat cautiously but each opponent he’s faced entered the ring with a winning record. He took a step up in class by facing a former world champion in Jose Pedraza in February and stopped him in the sixth round to win the vacant IBF USBA Belt. Davis won the vacant WBO Inter-Continental Belt with his win over Burgos in December, 2022 and then picked up the vacant WBC USA Belt when he stopped Anthony Yigit in the ninth round four months later.

Prediction…

Berinchyk is an aggressive fighter but lacks power but is a tough son of a gun with a solid chin. He doesn’t really possess what you’d call elite boxing skills however and he’s now 36 years old. Davis has fantastic boxing skills and speed and doesn’t rely on his power to win, but it’s always there. He may have to work twice as hard as usual but I’m expecting Davis to work his way to a title belt this weekend and there’s a chance he does it via a stoppage.

Davis is 11 years younger with better skills and more power.
