Ebenezer Tetteh vs Dillian Whyte Preview December 15th, 2024

Aging heavyweight hopefuls Dillian Whyte of Jamaica and Ebenezer Tetteh of Ghana are back in action this Sunday, December 15th, when they meet in Gibraltar. The 10-rounder can be seen live in most nations on DAZN. Whyte last fought in March when he halted Christian Hammer after three rounds while Tetteh’s last fight resulted in a fifth-round TKO over Ayaovi Agbonson in April.

My Pick

Tetteh is 36 years old and is known for his power due to an impressive record of 23-1 with 20 Ko’s. He’s got a lot of power in his punches as 87 per cent of his victories have come by stoppage, including his last 10. However his lone career defeat was also by stoppage as Daniel Dubois blasted him out in just 130 seconds back in 2019 in a shot at the vacant Commonwealth and WBO International Heavyweight Belts. This will be just Tetteh’s fifth fight since that loss. He made his pro debut back in 2012 and has fought just 100 rounds since, due to his power and early defeat.

While he may possess a fine record, Tetteh’s only recognizable opponent has been Dubois. There’s no official listing for his height and reach so it’s hard to compare him to Whyte. This will be his second fight outside of Africa as the loss to Dubois came in London, England. Tetteh did manage to win the vacant WBA Pan African Light Heavyweight Title in 2014 with a first-round TKO over Maxwell Amponsah.

He then captured the vacant WBO African Heavyweight Crown in 2017 with a second-round KO over Boniface Kabore. It looks like Tetteh started out as a light heavyweight, then moved up to cruiserweight for a few fights and settled in the heavyweight division. He weighed close to 234 lbs for a fight in November, 2022 then dropped down to 198 for a bout a year later and back up to 243 for his last contest in April.

Whyte is also 36 years old and fights out of London, England. He’s a former British and WBC International Heavyweight Champion and has also won the WBO International, WBC Silver and Interim WBC world Heavyweight Crowns. He enters the ring at 30-3 with 20 Ko’s and also has pretty good power in his fists with 66.7 per cent of his wins coming by stoppage but has stopped just two of his last seven opponents and is 5-2 in those bouts. Whyte stands 6-feet-4-four inches tall with a 78-inch reach and has boxed 185 rounds since turning pro in 2011 after a short amateur career.

His biggest wins have been over Hammer, Alexander Povetkin, Mariusz Wach, Oscar Rivas, Joseph Parker, Lucas Browne, Robert Helenius, Brian Minto and two victories over Dereck Chisora. Whyte’s first pro defeat came at the hands of Anthony Joshua via a seventh-round stoppage in December, 2015 before Joshua won his title belts by beating Wladimir Klitschko. Whyte also fought Joshua as an amateur in 2009 and dropped him along the way to a decision win.

He was then stopped by Povetkin in the fifth round in 2020 after he dropped the Russian twice in the fourth and his last defeat came at the hands of Tyson Fury by sixth-round TKO in 2022 in a shot at the WBC Heavyweight Title. Whyte’s a former kickboxer and mixed-martial artist with decent boxing skills but he usually relies on his power to carry him through. He’s got good size for a heavyweight but his chin can be questioned as he’s been stopped by Fury, Povetkin and Joshua and was decked by Parker and Rivas. Whyte’s also beaten the likes of Ian Lewison, David Allen and Marcelo Luiz Nascimento.

Prediction…

Both Whyte and Tetteh are in the twilight of their careers, but they both also have the power to stop each other. If either of them doesn’t take his opponent seriously or comes in out of shape then he could pay for it. Tetteh will need to land something clean right on the button to win as he simply hasn’t fought the same level of opponents that Whyte has and just eight of his 24 opponents entered the ring with a winning record. Even though anything can happen with two hard-hitting heavyweights, I expect Whyte will do enough to pull out a win here, likely by stoppage.

Whyte’s experience and power should do the trick.
