MY PICK
The 29-year-old Rosario took the IBF and WBA Jr. Middleweight Titles from Julian ‘J Rock’ Williams during William’s first defence in January, 2020 when he stopped him in the fifth round but lost them to Jermell Charlo in his first defence when he was stopped in the eighth round in September, 2020. Rosario’s mark now stands at 24-4-2 with 18 Ko’s. His first pro defeat came at the hands of Nathaniel Gallimore by way of sixth-round TKO in April, 2017.
His third loss was to Erickson Lubin by sixth-round KO in 2021, nine months after losing to Charlo and he was also stopped by Brian Mendoza in 2022. Rosario’s other draw was a six-round affair with Mark Anthony Hernandez in February, 2018. He turned pro in 2013 and has 130 rounds of experience under his belt since. Rosario has good power as 75 per cent of his wins have been by stoppage including seven of his last eight. However, he’s been stopped in all four of his losses so doesn’t appear to have the sturdiest of chins.
Rosario, who fights out of Miami, Florida stands 5-feet-11-inches tall with a 70-inch reach and has also beaten Mark Anthony Hernandez, Jorge Cota, Juan Rodriguez, Jamontay Clark, Justin DeLoach and Salim Larbi. Rosario won the vacant Dominican Republic Welterweight Title with a second-round TKO over Jose Vidal Soto in 2014 and the vacant WBA Fedecaribe Super Welterweight Belt with a third-round stoppage of Euri Gonzalez in 2015.
Ramos Jr is just 23 years old and is a southpaw. He’s boxed 99 rounds since turning pro in 2018 as a teenager. As an amateur, he reached the semifinals of the 2017 USA Youth National Championships. He climbs through the ropes with a fine mark of 21-1 with 17 big Ko’s and possesses plenty of power as 81per cent of his wins have come by stoppage, but has been taken the distance in four of his past seven bouts.
At 5-feet-10-inches tall with a 72-inch wingspan, Ramos gives up an inch in height to Rosario but has a 2.5-inch edge in reach on him. He took a step up in class against Erickson Lubin in 2023 and came out on the wrong end of a 12-round unanimous decision for his lone defeat. His biggest wins have been against Joseph Spencer, Esteban Garcia, Jesus Emilio Bojorquez, Javier Molina, Brian Mendoza and Luke Santamaria. He also stopped Vladimir Hernandez in February, 2022 to capture the vacant WBC USA Silver Super Welterweight Title.
PREDICTION…
Rosario looked pretty good against Jarrett Hurd in his last fight while Ramos struggled somewhat against Erickson Lubin when he stepped up in class. However Rosario’s Achilles Heel is his chin as all four of his losses have come by stoppage and Ramos has explosive power. Ramos isn’t just about power though as he also has fine boxing skills. Rosario’s experience will be useful here but he’s definitely going to have his chin tested. The odds are a bit wide but Ramos should emerge with a win even if he has to work for it.
Ramos’ power and skill should do the job.
