My Pick
The southpaw Rodriguez is currently one of the youngest pro world boxing champions as he’s just 24 years old. He enters the fight with a perfect mark of 20-0 with 12 Ko’s and possesses pretty good power in his arsenal with a current knockout ratio of 65 per cent and has stopped three of his past six opponents. Rodriguez stands 5-feet-4-inches tall with a 67-inch reach and is the brother of former WBA Super Flyweight Champion Joshua Franco. He made his pro debut in 2017 and has boxed 110 rounds since.
Rodriguez enjoyed a fine amateur career which saw him win the 2015 U.S. National Junior Under-17 Championship at 101 lbs, capture a silver medal at the 2015 World Junior Under-17 Championships at 101 lbs and win the 2016 U.S. National Junior Under-17 Championships at 106 lbs. As a pro, he beat Carlos Cuadras by unanimous decision to win the vacant WBC Super Flyweight Belt in February, 2022. He defended the title twice as he beat Israel Gonzalez by unanimous decision and stopped fellow southpaw and former world champion Srisaket Sor Rungvisai in the eighth round in June, 2022.
Rodriguez went down to win the vacant WBO Flyweight Title in April, 2023 when he beat Cristian Hernandez by unanimous decision and defended that belt for the first time and won the IBF version with his ninth-round stoppage of Sunny Edwards. Rodriguez also has wins over Armando Vazquez, Rauf Aghayev, Cesar Torrijos, Marco Sustaita, Janiel Rivera and Saul Juarez. He possesses excellent speed, skills, a solid chin and enough power.
The 34-year-old Guevara makes the ring walk with a mark of 44-4-1 with 22 Ko’s and has boxed 329 rounds since turning pro in 2008. He measures 5-feet-4-inches tall with a 67-inch reach, the same as Rodriguez. When it comes to power, 52.4 per cent of Guevara’s wins have come by stoppage and he’s gone the distance in his past six fights. The first loss for Guevara came at the hands of former world Champion John Riel Casimero by split decision in 2012 in a shot at the IBF Light Flyweight Title after being dropped in the first round.
He dropped another split decision in 2015 when Yu Kimura beat him for the WBC Light Flyweight Belt. He had a another shot at that belt in 2017 but lost a majority decision to Kenshiro Teraji. Guevara’s last defeat was also by split decision as he was edged by Carlos Cuadras in November in an attempt at the vacant WBC Interim Super Flyweight Title. Guevara captured the vacant WBC Light Flyweight Belt in 2014 when he stopped Akira Yaegashi in the seventh round in Japan in 2014.
He defended it against Richard Claveras and Ganigan Lopez before losing it to Yu Kimura. During his career Guevara has also won the vacant WBC Silver and NABA Light flyweight Belts as well as the WBC Fecarbox Super Flyweight Title. He also has wins over Karlius Diaz, Manuel Jiminez, Raul Garcia, Ruben Montoya Ramirez, Roberto Sanchez Cantu, Miguel Angel Herrera and Marvin Solano while his lone draw was a 12-round affair with Mario Rodriguez in defence of his WBC Silver Title.
Prediction…
Rodriguez and Guevera are both world-class boxers who aren’t afraid to let their hands go and give the fans value for their money. Guevera is a full decade older than the champion however and comes in second best in every category here other than height and reach. With Rodriguez possessing the better skills and more power I’m him to successfully defend his title but it could go the distance as Guevera has never been stopped in 47 pro fights and can obviously take a pretty good punch.
Rodriguez is 10 years younger and has the edge in power and skill.
