Jonathan Gonzalez-Ortiz vs Edgar Berlanga Preview March 15th, 2025

Edgar Berlanga of Brooklyn, New York is back in the ring this Saturday, March 15th to do battle with Puerto Rico’s unbeaten Jonathan Gonzalez-Ortiz. The 10-round super middleweight tilt from Orlando, Florida can be seen live in most nations on DAZN. Berlanga’s last outing resulted in a unanimous decision defeat to Canelo Alvarez in a shot at the WBC/WBA/WBO Super Middleweight Titles in September after being dropped in the third round. Gonzalez-Ortiz was last in the ring in June when he stopped Edward Ulloa Diaz in the seventh round after being dropped in the opening round.

My Pick

The 35-year-old Gonzalez-Ortiz owns a near-perfect record of 20-0-1 with 16 Ko’s and has 100 rounds of pro experience under his belt since making his debut back in 2009. He enjoyed a fine amateur career and represented his nation at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China as a welterweight and won a silver medal at the 2007 Pan American Games in Brazil. He measures 5-feet-11-inches tall but unfortunately has an unlisted reach. The lone blemish on Gonzalez-Ortiz’s pro record is a 12-round draw with Serhiy Dzinziruk back in 2012.

The former Olympian beat Richard Gutierrez via a 10-round unanimous decision in 2011 to capture the vacant WBO NABO Super Welterweight Belt. He also has wins over Billy Lyell, Rudy Ciseneros, Derek Ennis and Rogelio Medina Luna. Gonzalez-Ortiz left the sport after his win against Luna in May, 2014 and didn’t fight again until March, 2024 when he came back to stop Jose Saint-Hilaire Gil. As far as power goes, Gonzalez-Ortiz can hold his own as 80 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage.

The 27-year-old Berlanga carries around a fine mark of 22-1 with 17 Ko’s and has boxed 84 rounds since his pro debut. He started his pro career in 2016 by flying out of the gate with 16 consecutive first-round knockouts. However, he’s been taken the distance now in six of his last seven fights. Before halting Padraig McCrory in February, 2024, his last stoppage came in December, 2020 when he halted Ulises Sierra in 160 seconds. Still, he owns a highly-impressive knockout ratio of 77.3 per cent.

Berlanga, who’s nicknamed ‘The Chosen One,’ stands 6-feet-1-inch tall with a 73-inch reach for a two inch height advantage on Gonzalez-Ortiz. Berlanga also enjoyed a fine amateur career with a reported record of 162-17. He placed second at the 2013 National Police Athletic League Championships (Junior Level), second at the 2013 U.S. National Junior (Under-17) Championships, third at the 2014 U.S. National Youth (Under-19) Championships and second at the 2015 U.S. National Youth (Under-19) Championships.

It’s no secret that Berlanga’s power along with decent skills have helped him get this far with some of his other wins coming over the likes of Roamer Alexis Angulo, Steve Rolls, Marcelo Caceres, Jaime Barboza, Aaron Garcia, Samir dos Santos Barbosa, Cesar Nunez, Eric Moon, Lanell Bellows, and Demond Nicholson. Jason Quigley, Nicholson, Alvarez, Caceres, Rolls and Angulo are the only men to go the distance with Berlanga and also get past the sixth round. His 10-round unanimous decision victory over Caceres in October, 2021 saw him capture the vacant WBO NABO Belt and he defended it against Rolls, Angulo and Quigley.

Prediction…

Berlanga did okay against Alvarez last year but his power seems to be missing in action lately. Gonzalez is eight years older than Berlanga and this is just his third comeback fight after being out of the ring for 10 years. He has plenty of power and skill but hasn’t really beaten any top contenders. The odds are stacked against him here but you never know what can happen in the ring. Gonzalez-Ortiz has a puncher’s chance and it’s possible he could outbox Berlanga but those scenarios are long shots. Berlanga is expected to win and should do so but it could go the distance.

This is Gonzalez-Ortiz’s third fight after a 10-year layoff.
