My Pick

The 25-year-old Huni enters the ring with a perfect mark of 11-0 with 6 Ko’s and has 76 rounds of experience under his belt since making his pro debut in 2020. Before that he enjoyed a successful amateur career which saw him win a bronze medal at the 2019 World Championships and the gold at the 2016 Youth World championships. As a pro, he stopped his first three opponents but has gone the distance five of his last eight outings for a current knockout ratio of 54.6 per cent.

Huni captured the Australian Heavyweight Crown in his first pro fight when he stopped Faiga Opelu in the seventh round. He defended it by halting Arsene Fosso in the fourth round, beating Christian Ndzie Tsoye by 10-round unanimous decision and stopping Paul Gallen in the 10th and final stanza. Huni then added the vacant WBO Oriental, IBF Pan Pacific, and Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation Heavyweight Titles with a 10-round unanimous decision over Joseph Goodall.

He defended all three titles via a 10-round unanimous decision over Kiki Toa Leutele in 2022. He then beat Andrew Tabiti by 10-round unanimous decision in November, 2023 and captured the vacant WBO Global Heavyweight Belt via a 10-round unanimous decision over Kevin Lerena last April and defended it by stopping Troy Pilcher in the second round four months later. Huni stands 6-feet-4-inches tall with a 76.5-inch reach.

There isn’t much known about Potgieter other than he’s 42 years old and is the current South African Heavyweight Champion. He won that title in April when he stopped Keaton Gomes in the 11th round. Gomes had handed Potgieter his lone loss as a pro two years earlier when he caught him cold in the opening round and stopped him in just 80 seconds.

Potgieter didn’t turn pro until he was 33 years old back in 2016 and has just 41 rounds of experience to his name. He stands just over 6-feet-4-inches tall with an unlisted reach so is just half-an-inch shorter than Huni. He’s fought limited opposition as a pro but has pretty good power as 70 per cent of his wins have been by stoppage including his last three.

Prediction…

Potgieter has the power, aggressiveness and durability to surprise a few people here including Huni, but he’s 42 year old, 17 years older than Huni, and will be fighting in his opponent’s backyard. Huni is the clear favourite here but he might find the going a bit tougher than expected as Potgieter’s a solid pro who likes to let his hands go. It’s unlikely he’ll pull off an upset though but Huni may have to go the distance to beat him.

Huni is 17 years younger with more experience.
