My Pick

Castaneda’s a 30-year-old with a record of 21-6 with 9 Ko’s. He’s boxed 163 rounds since making his pro debut in 2012 following an amateur career which saw him reach the 2012 National Golden Gloves semifinals. His first career loss came in 2020 when Yomar Alamo beat him by a 10-round majority decision in a shot at the WBO NABO Super Lightweight Crown. That started off a string of five consecutive losses for Castaneda up to December, 2021.

He then lost to Jose Zepeda, Josue Vargas and Mauricio Pintor by unanimous decision and was stopped in seven rounds by Raul Curiel in a shot at the NABF Welterweight Belt. Castaneds rebounded from the losing streak with a pair of wins but was then stopped by Antonio Moran in the 10th and final round in 2022. He’s won his last two bouts however including am eight-round unanimous decision over Jarrod Tennant for the vacant American Boxing Federation Inter-Continental Welterweight crown.

There isn’t too much power in Castaneda’s artillery as just 42.9 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage and he’s stopped just two opponents in his last 14 fights dating back to 2018. He stands 5-feet-10-inches tall with a 67-inch reach and won the vacant NABA Super Lightweight Title in 2018 with a 10-round unanimous decision over Gilbert Venegas Jr. He also has wins over Sonny Frederickson, Jesus Gutierrez and Eudy Bernardo.

The 28-year-old southpaw Rodriguez owns a fine record of 16-1-1 with 13 wins coming by way of stoppage for a current knockout ratio of 81.3 per cent. He has just 84 rounds of experience under his belt since making his pro debut in 2018. Before that he enjoyed a fine amateur career as he made it to the final of the 2018 Central American and Caribbean Games where he was beaten by Andy Cruz and also lost to Cruz in the quarterfinals of the 2017 AIBA World Championships and the 2017 Pan American Championship Final. He also competed in the World Series of Boxing in 2017.

Rodriguez stands 5-feet-10-inches tall with a wingspan of 71 inches so has a four-inch reach advantage over Castaneda. His lone pro defeat came at the hands of Kenneth Sims Jr by eight-round majority decision in 2021 for the vacant WBC USA Super Lightweight Title and his lone draw was a one-round technical draw against Joaquin Chavez in 2019 when Chavez was cut from an accidental headbutt and couldn’t continue. Rodriguez’s biggest wins have been against Viktor Postol, Luis Alberto Veron, Juan Pablo Romero,Juan Velasco and Joseph Adorno.

Prediction…

Rodriguez hasn’t really lived up to expectations as of yet but silenced some of his critics with his KO win over Viktor Postol last year. He has a big edge in power here against an opponent who’s lost six times and been stopped twice. He can’t take Castaneda lightly and underestimate his skills though but if Rodriguez has hopes of earning a world title shot someday he needs to shine against Castaneda and stop him, which is what i believe he’ll do.

Rodriguez’s power should be the difference.
