Former WBO Bantamweight Champion Tomoki Kameda of Japan takes on Lerato Dlamini of South Africa in a 12-round junior featherweight rematch in Suita, Japan this Saturday, August 24th. The two first met in Tokyo last October with Dlamini edging Kameda via a 12-round split decision. My Pick

The 33-year-old Kameda hails from of Osaka and will climb through the ring ropes with a mark of 41-4 along with 23 Ko’s and has boxed 325 rounds since making his pro debut in 2008. Kameda can box and also has decent power on his punches as 56.1 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage including his last three victories. However he went the distance in his seven previous fights. Kameda seems to have returned to his aggressive style of a few years ago though which saw him typically go after his opponent when he had him hurt.

His first two losses came against Jamie McDonnell when McDonnell was the WBA Bantamweight king. Kameda had him down in the third round of their first meeting in 2015, but dropped a close unanimous decision by scores of 114-113 across the board. McDonnell then beat him in their rematch by unanimous decision four months later. His third defeat came at the hands of Rey Vargas in 2019 in a shot at the WBC Super Bantamweight Title. Kameda stands just over 5-feet-7-inches tall and has a 67-inch reach.

Kameda won the WBO Bantamweight title in 2013 with a unanimous decision over Paulus Ambunda. He then defended it against Immanuel Naidjala by unanimous decision, against Panya Uthok by seventh-round KO and Alejandro Hernandez by split decision before vacating the championship. Since turning pro he’s also won the WBC Silver, NABF, WBC Youth World, WBC CABOFE, and WBC FECARBOX Bantamweight Titles and also has wins over Ivan Morales, Daniel Noriega, Yonfrez Parejo and William Encarnacion. Tomoki is the younger brother of fellow boxers Koki and Daiki Kameda.

As for the 30-year-old Dlamini, he makes the ring walk with a mark of 20-2 with 11 Ko’s and has 135 rounds of experience under his belt since turning pro in 2015. He measures 5-feet-5-inches tall with an unlisted reach so gives up 2.5-inches in height to Kameda. He also has decent power in his fists with 55 per cent of his victories coming by way of stoppage including four of his last five wins.

His first defeat came at the hands of Michael Mokoena in his pro debut by way of a four-round points decision while his second loss was to James Dickens by close unanimous decision in October, 2022 in a shot at the vacant IBO Featherweight Title. As a pro, he’s won the vacant IBF Youth and African Featherweight titles as well as the vacant WBC Silver Featherweight Belt when he beat Dave Penalosa via a wide 12-round unanimous decision in 2019.

Prediction…

Both Kameda and Dlamini can be very exciting boxers when they let their hands go and they also have dependable chins. Kameda has a lot more experience and will be fighting at home but that didn’t help him the first time around against Dlamini. Kameda needs to be a bit more aggressive this time around if he hopes to avenge his loss in this rematch and I’ll go with Kameda here in a hard-fought battle.

Kameda’s chin and experience should pull him through.
