Mikaela Mayer vs Sandy Ryan Preview March 29th, 2025
Former WBO Welterweight Champion Sandy Ryan of England will be trying to win back her belt when she takes on Mikaela Mayer of Woodland Hills, California this Saturday, March 29th. The 10-rounder from Las Vegas, Nevada can be seen live in America on the ESPN platform while fans in the UK and Ireland can catch it on Sky Sports Action and those in Canada can see it on TSN+. Mayer and Ryan met last September at Madison Square Garden in New York with Mayer taking the title via a 10-round majority decision. In her previous outing, Mayer dropped a 10-round split decision to Natasha Jones in a shot at the IBF Welterweight Title. Ryan’s previous fight saw her stop Terri Harper after four rounds to defend her crown. Mayer lost her world junior lightweight titles to Alycia Baumgardner via split decision in October, 2022 in her only other pro defeat.

The 31-year-old Ryan of Derby makes the ring walk with a mark of 7-2-1 with 3 Ko’s and has boxed 77 rounds since making her pro debut in 2021. Before that she enjoyed an extensive amateur career which saw her reach the quarterfinals of the 2019 EUBC European Women’s Championships and win the 2018 Commonwealth Games. She also won a silver medal at the 2014 World Championships and a bronze at the 2016 European Championships and the 2015 European Games.
The lone first on Ryan’s pro record came at the hands of Erica Anabella Farias by way of a 10-round split decision in March, 2022. She avenged that loss just five months later when she beat Farias by a 10-round unanimous decision to capture the vacant WBC International Super Lightweight Title. Ryan defended that belt against Anahi Ester Sanchez by unanimous decision and then won the vacant WBO Welterweight Title in April, 2023 via a unanimous decision over Marie Pier Houle.
Ryan took on IBO and WBC Welterweight champion Jennifer McCaskill in September, 2023 and battled to a 10-round draw as both champions kept their belts. She measures just over 5-feet-8-inches tall with a 67.5-inch reach and as far as power goes, Ryan has registered 42.9 per cent of her wins by stoppage. However she’s been taken the distance in six of her last seven fights.
The 34-year-old Mayer climbs through the ropes with an impressive record of 20-2 with 5 Ko’s and has boxed 164 rounds since turning pro in 2017. She also enjoyed a fine amateur career and reportedly went 62-25 while winning the 2012, 2015 and 2016 USA Women’s National Championships Final and finished second in 2014. She also won the 2011, 2013 and 2014 USA Women’s National Golden Gloves Final and took bronze at the 2012 World Championships.
Mayer won the vacant WBC-NABF Female Junior Lightweight Title with an eight-round unanimous decision over Vanessa Bradford in 2018 and won the vacant WBO Junior Lightweight Belt in 2020 with a 10-round unanimous nod over Ewa Brodnicka. She then captured the IBF and Ring Magazine Junior Lightweight Championships in 2021 by beating Maiva Hamadouche by 10-round unanimous decision. Mayer stands 5-feet-9-inches tall with a 66.5-inch reach which sees her stand half-an-inch taller than Ryan while giving up an inch in reach.
She has far less power though as just 25 per cent of her wins have been by stoppage and she has gone the distance in her last 10 fights. Mayer won the vacant NABF Super Featherweight Title in 2018 when she beat Vanessa Bradford by an eight-round unanimous decision and defended it three times. She captured the vacant WBO World Super Featherweight Title in 2020 with a 10-round unanimous decision over Ewa Brodnicka when Brodnicka lost her belt by coming in overweight and the title was on the line for Mayer only.
Mayer added the IBF version of the title in 2021 with a 10-round unanimous decision over Maiva Hamadouche and defended them with a unanimous decision over Jennifer Han before losing the belts to Alycia Baumgardner, the IBO and WBC Champion, in October, 2022. She rebounded from her lone loss with a 10-round unanimous decision over Lucy Wildheart to win the WBC Interim Lightweight Belt in April, 2023. Mayer has faced just two boxers with losing records as a pro and they were her first two bouts in 2017.
Prediction…
Both boxers have slick boxing skills but Ryan has a bit more power. The first fight was a very close affair with both women having their moments in a back and forth contest. Again, whoever takes the bull by the horns and lets their hands go should win this fight and that’s basically going to be another coin toss. No outcome will be a surprise, including a draw but I’ll go with Mayer as I believe she’ll retain the title with another close win or a draw.
