My Pick
Jonas of Liverpool is now 40 years old and enters the ring with a mark of 16-2-1 with 9 Ko’s and has 115 rounds of experience under her belt since turning pro in 2017. As an amateur, Jonas captured a bronze medal in the light-welterweight division at the 2011 European Championships as well as a bronze in the lightweight division at the 2012 AIBA World Championships and a silver medal in the light-welterweight division at the 2014 European Championships.
She began boxing in 2005 and in 2009 became the first female boxer to compete for GB Boxing and won the gold medal in the 64 kilogram division at the Women’s European Union Amateur Boxing Championships that year. She won the inaugural GB Amateur Boxing Championships in 2010 and in 2012 she she reached the semi-finals of the 2012 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in China to become the first ever female British boxer to qualify for an Olympic Games.
Jonas competed at the 2012 Olympics in London, England and reached the quarterfinals where she was beaten by Ireland’s Katie Taylor. The first six opponents Jonas faced as a pro all had losing records and she was then stopped in her seventh fight in the fourth round by Viviane Obenauf, the first time she fought an opponent with a winning record. Jonas bounced back with three straight wins against limited opposition and then challenged Terri Harper for the IBO and WBC Super Featherweight Titles in 2020 but fell just short as she battled to a 10-round draw.
Her winless streak reached two fights as Jonas then dropped a close split decision to Katie Taylor nine months later in a shot at Taylor’s IBF/WBA/ WBC and WBO Lightweight Titles. Jonas captured the vacant WBO Super Welterweight Belt in February, 2022 when she moved up in weight again to take on Chris Namus and stopped her in the second round. She added the WBC version by beating Patricia Berghult by unanimous decision seven months later and the IBF Belt just two months after that with a unanimous decision over Marie Eve Dicaire.
Jonas then dropped back to welterweight to win the vacant IBF title against Kandi Wyatt and then defended it via a controversial split decision against Mikaela Mayer. Jonas is a southpaw who stands 5-feet-8-inches tall with a 68-inch reach. When it comes to power, she has quite a bit of it for the female sport as 56.3 per cent of her wins have come by way of knockout. However she’s been taken the distance in seven of her last nine fights and has a 7-1-1 record over that span. In total, 10 of her 19 pro opponents have entered the ring with a winning record.
The 30-year-old Price is also a southpaw and hails from Newport, Wales. She climbs through the ropes with a perfect record of 8-0 with 2 Ko’s and has boxed 54 rounds since turning pro in 2022. She also enjoyed a fine amateur career and is a former soccer player and kickboxer. Price won a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games in 2014 and a gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. She also won a gold medal at the 2019 World Championships, the 2019 European Games and the 2020 Summer Olympics and bronze medals at the 2018 World Championships and at the 2011, 2016 and 2018 European Championships.
As a kickboxer, Price captured a silver medal at a 2007 World Championships event as a 13-year-old while competing against women. She was a four-time world champion and six-time European champion in kickboxing and also competed in Taekwondo. Price stands just over 5-feet-5-inches tall with an unlisted reach which sees her give up 2.5-inches in height to Jonas. She has far less power than Jonas as well her current knockout ratio clocks in at 25 per cent. Price won the vacant British Welterweight Title in May, 2023 when she beat Kirstie Bavington by a 10-round unanimous decision. It was the first ever women’s British title contest. None of Price’s eight pro opponents entered the ring with a losing record.
Prediction…
Both boxers have slick boxing skills and had excellent amateur careers but Price is 10 years younger than Jonas. The edge in power goes to Jonas and because they will be fighting just 10 two-minute rounds it’s imperative to get off to a quick start. This should be a close and intriguing fight but I feel the younger Price will do just enough to eke out a victory.
Price is 10 years younger then Jonas.
