  • Mike Plania +750
  • Omar Trinidad -1000

My Pick

Trinidad is a 28-year-old who climbs into the ring with an almost perfect mark of 17-0-1 with 13 Ko’s. He’s a pretty big hitter as his current knockout ratio clocks in at 76.5 per cent and he’s stopped eight of his last 10 opponents. He made his pro debut in 2018 after an amateur career and is currently ranked sixth in the world by the WBO and WBC and second by the IBF. He stands 5-feet-9-inches tall with a 70-inch reach.

Trinidad has good mobility with fine lateral movement and a stinging jab and prefers to fight from range than in close quarters. He’s a good combination puncher as well but isn’t really known for his speed. The lone blemish on his record is a four-round draw with Gerardo Yescas, which came in his pro debut. He’s beaten the likes of Jose Luis Ramirez, Roberto Meza, Jose Perez and Viktor Slavinskyi and originally won his title last January when he stopped Perez in the eighth round.

The 27-year-old Plania climbs through the ropes with a mark of 31-4 with 18 Ko’s and has boxed 162 rounds since making his pro debut back in 2014. Before that he enjoyed a pretty good amateur career which saw him capture a gold medal in the junior division at the 2013 PLDT-ABAP National Boxing Championships in the Philippines and a gold at the 2013 Philippine National Games. He also represented his homeland in 2013 at the AIBA Junior World Boxing Championships in Ukraine.

Since turning pro, Plania won the vacant WBF International Bantamweight Title in 2016, the vacant WBC Asian Boxing Council Silver Super Bantamweight Crown and the vacant IBF North American Super Bantamweight Title. His first defeat came at the hands of of Juan Carlos Payano by 10-round unanimous decision in 2018 in a shot at the vacant WBO Inter-Continental Bantamweight Title despite dropping him in the third round.

His second loss Plania’s was to Ra’eese Aleem by a wide 10-round unanimous decision in October, 2022 in a shot at the WBO NABO Super Bantamweight Crown and he was stopped by Elijah Pierce in August, 2023 in the third round. His last defeat came to Angelo Leo last January when he was stopped in the third round in an attempt at the WBA Continental North America Featherweight Belt.

His biggest wins have been against Joshua Greer Jr, Ricardo Nunez, Giovanni Gutierrez, Mark Anthony Geraldo and Juan Antonio Lopez. Plania measures just over 5-feet-4-inches tall with a 65.5-inch reach so is giving up 4.5-inches in both height and reach to Trinidad. As far as power is concerned, Plania also comes in second best here as 58.1 per cent of his wins have been by stoppage including his last five.

Prediction…

Trinidad and Plania are both good boxers with Trinidad having more power and a sturdier chin. He also has quite a height and reach advantage and that suits his style as he’ll try to pick Plania apart from distance. Despite the odds, I can see either boxer winning this fight but am leaning towards Trinidad due to his physical advantages.

Trinidad has more power and a better chin.
