Oscar Collazo vs Edwin Cano Preview March 29th, 2025

Unbeaten Oscar Collazo of Newark, New Jersey puts his 105 lb WBO Minimumweight (Strawweight) World Title up against Edwin Cano of Mexico this Saturday, March 29th. The 12-rounder from Cancun, Mexico can be seen live in most nations on DAZN. Collazo defended the belt for the first time in August, 2023 when he stopped Garen Diagan after six rounds after winning the title just three months earlier when he halted Melvin Jerusalem after seven rounds. He defended it via a third-round TKO over Reyneris Gutierrez, then beat Gerardo Zapata by a wide unanimous decision and stopped Thammanoon Niyomtrong in the seventh round in his last outing in November. Cano’s last fight resulted in a fourth-round KO over Michael Carmona in July for the WBO Latino Minimumweight Belt.

Here are the betting odds from online sportsbook BetOnline.ag (full review here).

  • Edwin Cano +900
  • Oscar Collazo -2000

My Pick

The 28-year-old Collazo is a southpaw who resides in Puerto Rico and has 66 rounds of experience to his name since making his pro debut in 2020 following a fine seven-year amateur career which saw him win five national amateur titles as well as a bronze medal the 2017 PanAmerican Championships and a gold disc at the 2019 Pan American Games. He’s gone a perfect 11-0 as a pro with 8 Ko’s and stands 5-feet-2-inches tall with a 61-inch reach.

Collazo won the vacant WBO Latino Minimumweight title in his fourth pro outing when he halted Pedro Villegas in the third round and captured the world title in his seventh fight with the stoppage of Jerusalem. Collazo has heavy hands for such a small boxer as his current knockout ratio stands at 80 per cent. The only three men to go the distance with him have been Francisco Zambrano over six rounds in 2021; Vic Saludar over 12 rounds in July, 2022 and Gerardo Zapata in 12 last June. Both Saludar and Collazo hit the deck in the seventh round in their contest.

Cano, also known as Edwin Cano Hernandez, is 27 years old with a mark of 13-2-1 with just 4 Ko’s and has boxed 76 rounds since making his pro debut in 2016 as a teenager. Unfortunately there’s no height and reach information for Cano so we don’t know how he stacks up in those departments against Collazo. As far as power is concerned though, Cano doesn’t come anywhere near the champion as just 30.8 per cent of his wins have been by stoppage. He has halted his last two opponents though after going the distance in his four previous bouts.

The first loss on Cano’s record came at the hands of David Jiminez in 2021 when he was stopped in the third round. He then dropped an eight-round majority decision to German Valenzuela Barreras in 2022 and his lone draw was a four-round technical decision with Miguel Luna Tlapaya in August, 2023. Therefore, he has four wins, two losses and a draw in his past seven fights. Cano has never gone past eight rounds in his career and has fought in just one scheduled 10-rounder, so there’s no doubt he’s taking a gigantic leap in class against Collazo this weekend.

Prediction…

This fight comes down the the hard-hitting Collazo against the light-hitting Cano. The only edge Cano appears to have here is the fact that he’s fighting in his homeland. Collazo has experience against tougher opposition and Cano’s lack of power will mean it will be hard for the challenger to keep Collazo off of him. I’m expecting Collazo to hang onto his title here with a good bet being on him winning by stoppage.

Collazo is a class or two above Cano at this stage of their careers.
