My Pick
The 26-year-old southpaw Iglesias fights out of Berlin, Germany and makes the ring walk with a perfect mark of 11-0 with 10 Ko’s and has just 36 rounds of experience under his belt since turning pro in 2019. Before that he enjoyed an extensive amateur career and won a silver medal at four straight Cuban National Championships from 2015 to 2018. He also participated in the world Series of boxing in 2017.
It’s obvious that Iglesias has excellent power in his punches as he boasts a current knockout ratio of 91 per cent and has gone the distance just once as a pro when Isaac Chilemba took him 12 rounds in may 2022 when Iglesias captured the vacant IBO International Super Middleweight Belt. In his previous bout four months earlier, Iglesias won the vacant IBO World Youth Super Middleweight Crown by stopping Robert Racz in just 145 seconds.
Iglesias has good size for the 168 lb division as he stands just over 6-feet-2-inches but unfortunately has an unlisted reach. Like most elite Cuban boxers, he possesses polished skills to go along with his tremendous power. He also has wins over Marcelo Coceres, Arthur Reis, Andrii Velikovskyi, Ezequiel Osvaldo Maderna and Rafael Sosa Pintos. Iglesias has a fan-friendly style with six first-round knockouts and has recorded two in the second round and is currently ranked fifth in his division by the WBC and 10th by the IBF.
As for Agbeko, he’s 32 years old and fights out of Nashville, Tennessee. He enters the contest with a mark of 28-3 with 22 Ko’s and has boxed 135 rounds since making his pro debut in 2011. He measures 6-feet tall with a 74.5-inch wingspan so is 2.5-inches shorter than Iglesias. Agbeko also has better-than-average power as 78.6 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage, including four of his past five.
Agbeko’s first defeat came at the hands of Raymond Gatica by fourth-round TKO in 2014 with his second loss coming via a 10-round unanimous decision to Vladimir Shishkin in February, 2021. He then won five fights in a row before being stopped by Morrell the last time out, including a ninth-round TKO over Winfred Harris Jr in July, 2022 for the vacant WBC USA Super Middleweight Title. Earlier in his career, Agbeko captured the vacant West African Boxing Union West Super Middleweight Title and the vacant Ghana Boxing Authority Middleweight Belt.
The first 15 of Agbeko’s fights came in his homeland before moving to America and just two of those opponents entered the ring with a winning record. In fact, just nine of his next 16 opponents had winning records too, meaning just 11 of his total 30 opponents have stepped into the ring as winners. Agbeko’s taking a second consecutive step up in class this weekend against Iglesias as his biggest victories have come against George Amuzu, Shannon Miller, Brad Austin, Brian Vera and Isaiah Steen.
Prediction…
Both boxers have good power and Agbeko will need it to keep the aggressive Iglesias off of him, but he was stopped by David Morrell in his last contest and I believe he’s likely going to suffer the same fate this weekend unless Iglesias has a porcelain chin, which I’m sure he doesn’t.
Iglesias is too aggressive and powerful for Agbeko.
