Otto Wallin vs Dereck Chisora Preview Feb. 8th, 2025

Veteran heavyweight Dereck ‘War’ Chisora of Zimbabwe is back in the ring this Saturday, Feb. 8th when he takes on Sweden’s Otto Wallin. The 12-round tilt from Manchester, can be seen live in the UK and Ireland on TNT Sports 1. Chisora, who fights out of England, was last in the ring in July when he upset Joe Joyce via a 10-round unanimous decision after dropping him in the ninth round. Wallin’s last fight was a one-sided affair which saw him stop Onoriode Ehwarieme in just 48 seconds. His previous bout, in December, 2023 was also one-sided when he was halted after five rounds by Anthony Joshua.

My Pick

Wallin is a 34-year-old southpaw who hails from Sundsvall, Sweden and carries around an impressive record of 27-2 with 15 Ko’s. He now fights out of New York City and has boxed 163 rounds since making his pro debut back in 2013 after a mediocre amateur career. He’s a good-sized heavyweight as he stands just over 6-feet-5-inches tall with a reach of 78 inches. Wallin has decent power in his punches as 55.6 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage. However he’s stopped just two of his last 11 opponents.

One of the biggest problems with Wallin here is the quality of opponents he’s faced so far or perhaps I should say his lack of success when stepping up in class. That being said, he did give Tyson Fury all he could handle in September, 2019 in first pro loss. He cut Fury up for 47 stitches along the way but dropped a 12-round unanimous decision to him. Wallin stopped Gianluca Mandras in the fifth round in 2017 to lay claim to the vacant WBA Continental Heavyweight Title.

A year later he captured the EBE European Heavyweight Crown via a unanimous decision over Adrian Granat. He’s also faced the likes of Murat Gassiev, Rydell Booker, Kamil Sokolowski, Dominic Breazeale, Travis Kauffman, Srdan Govedarica, Raphael Zumbano, Osborne Machimana, Samir Kurtagic and Vladimir Goncharov. Wallin’s a heavyweight hopeful who always has a puncher’s chance no matter who he faces due to his size, decent power and chin.

The 41-year-old Chisora climbs into the ring with a mark of 35-13 with 23 Ko’s. Along with losing a trio of bouts to Tyson Fury (twice by stoppage), he’s been beaten twice by Dillian Whyte as he was stopped in the 11th round of a slugfest in December, 2018 and dropped a 12-round split decision to him two years earlier. And more recently, he lost for the second time to former heavyweight titleholder Joseph Parker as he dropped a 12-round unanimous decision in December, 2021 after losing a split decision to him seven months earlier.

His other losses came via a fifth-round TKO to David Haye in 2012, a unanimous decision to world champ Vitali Klitschko five months earlier and a 12-round split decision to Robert Helenius three months before that for three straight defeats. Chisora was also beaten by Kubrat Pulev in May, 2017 and by Agit Kabayel via a majority decision in November, 2017 and dropped a unanimous decision to Oleksandr Usyk in October, 2020. However, he avenged the loss to Pulev via a 12-round split decision last July in one of his best career performances.

Chisora stands just over 6-feet-1-inch tall and has a 74-inch wingspan so gives up four inches in height and four inches in reach to Wallin. He may be a bit more skilled than people give him credit for as he can throw decent combinations when he’s in a rhythm but often leaves himself exposed to counter shots. His biggest wins have been over Joyce, Pulev, Artur Szpilka, Carlos Takam, Malik Scott and Kevin Johnson. He has plenty of experience against top-notch opposition but often falls short when stepping up in class with the exceptions being against Joyce, Takam and Pulev.

Chisora has captured the WBA International and WBO International, WBA Inter-Continental and British Heavyweight Titles as a pro and has boxed 334 rounds since making his debut in 2007. He has pretty good power as 65.7 per cent of he wins have come by stoppage but hasn’t halted anybody since his TKO over David Price in four rounds in 2019. When Chisora’s motivated he can be pretty exciting by giving and taking all night long and can be a handful for anybody on the world stage but he sometimes runs out of steam as the fight goes on.

Prediction…

Wallin looked terrible in his fight against Joshua booked bounced back with a quick KO in his last outing. He doesn’t really want to get into a slugfest with Chisora because that’s where Chisora shines. He needs to use his height and reach to box him and keep him at bay at the end of his right jab. The rough and tumble Chisora should never be counted out of a fight despite his advanced age as he’s usually not gun shy, I expect both boxers to have their moments and this could go either way. I see Wallin winning if it’s a boxing match and Chisora taking it if it’s a brawl. It’s a tossup but I’ll side with Wallin.

Wallin’s size could be the difference.
