Alvarado vs Zepeda Segura Betting Odds

Here are the betting odds from online sportsbook BetOnline.ag (full review here).

  • Rene Alvarado +750
  • William Zepeda Segura -1250

My Pick

The 33-year-old Alvarado climbs through the ring ropes with a record of 32-11 with 21 Ko’s and has lost his last three fights by unanimous decisions. Before losing to Roach, he lost his world title in his first defence in January, 2021 by scores of 113-112 across the board to Roger Gutierrez even though he dropped him twice in the third round and once in the 12th round. Gutierrez also beat him in a rematch by a close unanimous decision seven months later. The two first met in 2017 when Alvarado won via a seventh-round TKO after Gutierrez suffered a cut eye and his corner threw the towel in.

Alvarado has boxed 268 rounds since turning pro in 2008 and has average power with a knockout ratio of 48.8 per cent. He stands 5-feet-7-inches tall with a 72-inch reach and had won eight fights in a row with five of them coming by stoppage before losing his crown to Gutierrez. Before that, he had lost six of his previous nine contests. Alvarado’s been stopped just once in pro career and that was at the hands of Andrew Cancio in the eighth round of their first meeting in 2015.

Alvarado then stopped Cancio after seven rounds in their 2019 rematch to win the WBA belt. His best wins have been against Cancio, Jayson Velez, Denis Shafikov and Juan Pablo Sanchez. He’s also lost decisions to Yuriorkis Gamboa, Orlando Rizo, Jezreel Corrales, Rocky Juarez, Eric Hunter, Joseph Diaz, and Manuel Avila.

Before winning the title, Alvarado was basically considered a solid journeyman who had taken on some good opponents and had been competitive against them. He didn’t have much luck in the past when stepping up in class other than against Shafikov. Since turning pro he’s also won the WBC Silver Featherweight and WBC International Silver Super Featherweight Crowns.

As for Zepeda Segura, he a southpaw and just 25 years old. He climbs into the ring with a perfect mark of 25-0 with 23 big Ko’s. He’s obviously made a name for himself due to his impressive power as he carries around a knockout ratio of 92 per cent. He’s boxed 102 rounds since making his pro debut in 2015 and has never fought past six rounds. Zepeda Segura has a two-inch edge in height on Alvarado as he’s 5-feet-9-inches tall but gives up 2.5-inches in reach to the former world champ.

He’s going to be stepping up in class this weekend as his biggest wins so far have been against the likes of Jose Fierros, Jesus Zazueta, Jose Rosales and Roberto Ramirez. He also won the vacant WBA Contintental Americas Lightweight Title in July 2021 when he stopped Hector Tanajara after six rounds and defended it once by halting John Vincent Moralde in four rounds in November.

Prediction…

It’s sink or swim time for Zepeda Segura as he moves up in class against a crafty and durable veteran like Alvarado. Zepeda Segura has been knocking out his opponents left, right and centre so far as a pro but might find Alvarado to put up quite a bit of resistance. Even so, I’m expecting Zepeda Segura to remain unbeaten in another fan-friendly fight.

Zepeda Segura’s power should decide this fight.
