My Pick
The 29-year-old Akui will climb through the ropes with a mark of 20-2-1 with 11 Ko’s and stands 5-feet-4-inches tall with a 67-inch reach. He made his pro debut in 2014 as a teenager and has 111 rounds of experience under his belt since. His first pro defeat came at the hands of former world champion Junto Nakatani in 2017 when he was stopped in the sixth round and was also halted in his second loss when Jaysever Abcede beat him in the eighth and final round just two fights later in October, 2018. The lone draw on Akui’s record came against Seita Ogido over four rounds in his third pro outing in 2014.
He captured the vacant Japanese Flyweight Title in 2019 by stopping Shun Kosaka in just 136 seconds and defended it three times including a 10th-round stoppage win over Kuwahara, who he beat by decision in his first world title defence. As far as power is concerned, Akui isn’t known as a knockout artist but has enough of it as 55 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage but has gone the distance in his last four fights and in five of the past six. Other than Nakatani and Dalakian, Akui has faced limited opposition as a pro.
Charunphak is just 24 years of age and makes the ring walk with a record of 25-1 with 15 Ko’s and has 141 rounds of experience under his belt since making his pro debut in 2018 as a teenager. He measures just over 5-feet-5-inches tall and unfortunately has an unlisted reach so is 1.5-inches taller than the champion. He captured the vacant Asian Flyweight Title in March, 2020 with a ninth-round stoppage over Suriyan Satorn and has defenced it four times.
As far as power is concerned, Charunphak is no slouch as 60 per cent of his victories have come by way of stoppage so he possesses a bit more power than Akui. He’s stopped just three of his last 10 opponents though. The lone defeat on his record came at the hands of Phongsaphon Panyakum by four-round unanimous decision in just his second pro outing back in 2018. Since then he’s won 24 straight fights, all in his home land of Thailand except for his last contest, which also took place in Japan.
Prediction…
Just 11 of Chrarunphak’s 26 opponents entered the ring with a winning record and he’s faced domestic opposition in Thailand. Still, he’s been beaten just once and has reeled off 24 consecutive wins. Akui may have received a bit of a gift with his unanimous decision win over Artem Dalakian in Osaka in January for the title and both of his defeats have come by stoppage. However he’s faced stiffer opposition up to now and will be fighting at home. I’ll lean towards an Akui win here.
Akui has confidence and momentum as he’s won the title and defended it once this year already.
