Serhii Bohachuk vs Brian Mendoza Preview March 30th, 2024
Brian Mendoza of Albuquerque, New Mexico will be squaring off against Ukraine’s Serhii Bohachuk for the vacant WBC Interim Junior Middleweight Title this Saturday, March 30th. The 12-rounder takes place in Las Vegas, Nevada and can be seen live on pay-per-view in most nations. Bohachuk was originally supposed to meet Sebastian Fundora but Fundora was called in to replace Keith Thurman in the card’s headlining fight against WBO Junior Middleweight Champion Tim Tzsyu. Mendoza last boxed in October when he dropped a unanimous decision to Tszyu in a shot at his belt. Bohachuk stopped Patrick Allotey in just 152 seconds in his last outing in July to defend his WBC Continental Americas Junior Middleweight Crown.

My Pick
The 28-year-old Bohachuk fights out of Los Angeles, California and makes the ring walk with an impressive record of 23-1 with all 23 wins coming by stoppage. His loss was by TKO so Bohachuk has never gone the distance as a pro with his longest bout going into the eight round, and that was the one in which he was stopped in when Brandon Adams halted him in March, 2021. Bohachuk was comfortably ahead on all three scorecards at the time after Adams was deducted a point for low blows in the third round.
It’s quite obvious that Bohachuk has remarkable power and he’s had to fight just 85 rounds in 24 contests since making his pro debut in 2017. Before that, he enjoyed a fine amateur career and competed in the World Series of Boxing for Ukraine. He was a silver medalist at the 2015 Ukrainian Championships and was a three-time national champion in the under-22 division. Bohachuk stands 6-feet-tall with a 73-inch reach and also has wins over Freddy Hernandez, Fernando Marin, Tyrone Brunson, Alejandro Davila, Raphael Igbokwe and Nathaniel Gallimore. He’s also a two-time WBC Continental Americas Junior Middleweight Champion.
Mendoza is now 30 years old and fights out of Las Vegas, Nevada. He’s boxed 101 rounds since making his pro debut in 2014 following his amateur career. He climbs through the ropes with a mark of 22-3 with 16 Ko’s with his three defeats coming in his last seven bouts. He dropped an eight-round split decision to Larry Gomez in 2019; a 10-round unanimous decision to Jesus Alejandro Ramos in September, 2021 and the unanimous decision loss to Tszyu his last time out.
He’s well known for his sensational knockout over Sebastian Fundora in the seventh round last April for the WBC Interim Junior Middleweight Title while trailing by a large margin on all three scorecards. At 5-feet-10-inches tall with a 70-inch reach, Mendoza gives up two inches in height to Bohachuk. As far as power goes, Mendoza also has plenty of it as 72.7 per cent of his wins have been by stoppage including his last three. None of his first 16 opponents entered the ring with a winning record though but the last nine have. His biggest wins have been over Fundora, Jeison Rosario and Thomas LaManna.
Prediction…
Bohachuk has exceptional power but Mendoza is definitely a tough cookie as he was able to withstand the hardest shots from Fundora and Tszyu. However, those fights may have taken quite a bit out of him. Mendoza can’t afford to be on the receiving end all night long here and he’ll need to produce some effective offence to keep Bohachuk from walking through him. Bohachuk has been stopped before so Mendoza certainly has a puncher’s chance here but I still think Bohachuk will wear him down sooner or later.
All 23 of Bohachuk’s wins have come by stoppage.
