Former IBF Junior Welterweight Champion Subriel Matias of Puerto Rico is back in the ring this Saturday, November 9th when he takes on Mexico’s Roberto Ramirez. The 10-rounder from Puerto Rico, can be seen live on PPV.com. Matias won the vacant title in February, 2023 when he stopped Jeremias Ponce of Argentina after the fifth round of a slugfest and then defended it against Shohjahon Ergashev in November by stopping him after the sixth round. However he lost the belt to Liam Paro this June when he dropped a unanimous decision at home in Puerto Rico. Ramirez, who fights out of San Diego, California, last fought in December when he stopped Rodolfo Flores Moreno in the seventh round.

My Pick

The 32-year-old Matias climbs into the ring with an impressive record of 20-2 with all 20 wins coming by KO, which means he’s got a current knockout ratio of 90.9 per cent with 100 per cent of his wins coming by stoppage. He’s boxed 108 rounds since turning pro in 2016 following his amateur career and stands 5-feet-8-inches tall with a 71-inch reach. The first pro defeat on Matias’ record came at the hands of Petros Ananyan in 2020 via a close 10-round unanimous decision after Matias was dropped in the seventh round.

He avenged that defeat two years later by stopping Ananyan in the ninth round. Matias’ biggest wins have been against Shohjahon Ergashev, Jeremias Ponce, Patrick Lopez, Adrian Estrella, Breidis Prescott, Fernando Saucedo, Wilberth Lopez, Maxim Dadashev, Malik Hawkins and Batyrzhan Jukembayev. Sadly, Dadashev passed away at the age of 28 after sustaining injuries in the bout with Matias. He’s a dangerous boxer who simply lets his hands go until his opponent is counted out, or quits.

The 31-year-old Ramirez makes the ring walk with a mark of 26-3-1 with 19 Ko’s and has fought 114 rounds since making his pro debut in 2011. At six-feet-tall with a 69-inch reach, he has a four-inch edge in height over Matias but gives up two inches in reach. As far as power is concerned, Ramirez has enough to do some damage as 73.1 per cent of his victories have come by stoppage including his last three and and six of his past seven.

The first loss in Ramirez’s career came at the hands of Carlos Ocampo by six-round split decision in 2013 with his second coming to Abel Ramos by second-round TKO in 2015. His last defeat was also by TKO as William Zepeda halted him in the fifth round in 2020. Ramirez’s draw was a six-round affair with Carlos Antonio Avila in 2015. His biggest wins have been against Cristian Lopez, Gilberto Meza, Dejan Zlaticanin, Francisco Javier Hernandez and Nery Saguilan.

Prediction…

Matias didn’t take Paro seriously in the summer and paid for it by losing his title. Hopefully he’s learned his lesson and focuses on the task at hand this time around instead of wasting his energy on his ring walk and dancing in the ring before the fight. At his best, Matias has an extremely high work rate but isn’t the hardest target to hit and has been dropped before. However, he usually overwhelms his opponents from the start to finish of most rounds and has the power to turn a fight around with a single punch. This should be quite entertaining and a tough fight as Ramirez also has power but I believe Matias wins it, likely by stoppage thanks to his volume punching, athleticism and power.

All of Matias’ 20 wins have been by stoppage.
