  • Eduardo Hernandez -280

My Pick

Hernandez is just 26 years old and carries around an impressive mark of 35-2 with 32 big Ko’s. He measures just over 5-feet-6-inches tall with a 68-inch reach and has boxed 102 rounds since turning pro back in 2014 as a teenager. Where Hernandez really shines is in the power department as 91.4 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage and that includes his last 29 victories.

His first defeat came at the hands of Roger Gutierrez in July 2019 when he was stopped in just 159 seconds and he second loss was a 12th-round TKO to O’ Shaquie Foster in a shot at the WBC Super Featherweight Title last October. Hernandez was well ahead on two of the judge’s scorecards when the fight was stopped and came within 22 seconds of lifting the title. During his career, Hernandez has captured the vacant WBC Youth Super Featherweight Title in 2017 and defended it five times.

He also won the WBC International Silver Super Featherweight Belt in June, 2022 when he stopped Jorge Castaneda in 95 seconds and defended it against Jorge Mata Cuellar via a fifth-round TKO. Hernandez struggled when he stepped up in class against ex-world champion Gutierrez but seemed to be taking the fight to Foster when he was stopped. Hernandez hasn’t been taking the easy route though as just six of his 37 opponents entered the ring with losing records.

The 34-year old Mattice makes the ring walk with a mark of 22-3-1 with 17 Ko’s and has 144 rounds of pro experience under his belt since making his debut in 2014 following a good amateur career. He measures 5-feet-9-inches tall with a 73-inch reach for a 2.5-inch height advantage over Hernandez as well as a five-inch edge in reach. As far as power goes, he has plenty of it as 77.3 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage including seven of his past eight.

Mattice’s first loss came to Will Madera by eight-round unanimous decision in 2019 and he dropped a 10-round majority decision to former world champion Issac Cruz in 2020. His last defeat was an eight-round unanimous decision to Luis Melendez in 2021. His lone draw was an eight-round affair with Zhora Hamazaryan in 2018.

Mattice won the vacant WBO Inter-Continental Lightweight Belt in 2019 with an eighth-round TKO over Michael Dutchover and he added the WBC Continental Americas Super Featherweight Crown in 2022 via a 10-round unanimous decision over Christian Tapia and he defended it last year with a 10th-round TKO over Ramiro Cesena.

Prediction…

This fight really comes down to the power of both boxers and their chins. Hernandez has the edge in raw power but Mattice arguably has the better whiskers. Also on the plus side for Hernandez is the fact that he’s fighting at home, has faced stiffer opposition and is eight years younger than his opponent. Because of that, I’ll go with Hernandez here in an entertaining battle.

Hernandez is younger, at home and possesses more power.
