Former IBF Junior Flyweight Champion Felix Alvarado is back in the ring this Friday, December 27th when he takes on unbeaten Tobias Reyes of Argentina this Friday, December 27th in his hometown of Managua, Nicaragua. This bout is being billed as an IBF Flyweight eliminator with the winner supposedly getting a crack at champion Angel Ayala.

- Felix Alvarado +180
- Tobias Reyes – 235
My Pick
The 26-year-old Reyes enters the fight with a near-perfect record of 16-0-1 with 15 Kos. He’s boxed 74 rounds since turning pro in 2021. It’s quite obvious that he carries around a lot of power in his arsenal as 93.8 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage. He’s gone the distance just twice as Cristian Gonzalez Hernandez battled him to a 10-round draw in October, 2023 and he went the four-round distance in just his second bout when he beat Maximiliano Oscar Isnarde by unanimous decision after dropping him in the first round.
Reyes stands 5-feet-3-inches tall but unfortunately his reach is unlisted. Since turning pro he’s also won the vacant South American Super Flyweight Title as well as the vacant Argentine Super Flyweight Belt. He has fought outside of Argentina just once and that was in Mexico City when he drew with Hernandez. He hasn’t fought the same level of opposition that Alvarado has and will be taking a step up in class against the former world champion this weekend. .
Alvarado is now 35 years old and carries around a mark of 41-4 with 35 Ko’s. His first career defeat came at the hands of Kazuto Ioka by unanimous decision in 2013 in a shot at the WBA Light Flyweight Title with his second defeat coming a year later to Juan Carlos Reveco, again by unanimous decision, this time for the WBA Flyweight Belt. Alvarado had two points deducted in that battle for low blows. He was beaten by Sunny Edwards via a close unanimous decision in 2022 in a shot at the IBF Flyweight Title.
Alvarado has already had a shot against Angel Ayala in 2023 and lost a controversial 12-round unanimous decision by scores of 114-113 across the board. The biggest win in Alvarado’s career came against Randy Petalcorin when he stopped him in the seventh round in 2018 for the vacant IBF Flyweight Title. He then defended it against Reiya Konishi by unanimous decision and Dee Jay Kriel by 10th-round stoppage. He then vacated the title in March, 2022 to move back up to the flyweight division. He’s also beaten the likes of Miguel Tellez, Nerys Espinoza, Jose Aguilar, Karluis Diaz and Israel Vasquez.
At 5-feet-4-inches tall with a 67-inch reach, Alvarado stands an inch taller than Reyes. He doesn’t match Reyes’ knockout percentage but boasts plenty of power of his own as 85.4 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage including five of his last six. However his record is 3-2 in his past five fights. Alvarado is one of the strongest boxers in the lower weight divisions and once went eight years without being beaten. He’s also a former Nicaraguan and WBC Latino Junior Flyweight Champion.
Prediction…
Alvarado had won 20 fights in a row with 18 of them coming by stoppage before losing to Sunny Edwards and he’s hoping to earn another title shot. He fell just short against Edwards and Angel Ayala and has a great chin as he’s never been stopped. Reyes is nine years younger than Alvarado though and it appears he has slightly more power than him. He’ll need a good chin against Alvarado and if he proves to have one then there’s a good chance he wins this fight. Alvarado has more experience and is fighting at home but Reyes should be more than a handful.
A very close call with Reyes having the slight edge due to his age and power.
