William Zepeda vs Giovanni Cabrera Preview July 6th, 2024

Unbeaten lightweight prospect William Zepeda of Mexico returns to the ring in a 12-round lightweight tilt against Giovanni Cabrera of Seattle, Washington this Saturday, July 6th. The fight from Ontario, California can be seen live in most nations on DAZN. Zepeda took care of Maxi Hughes as he stopped him after four rounds in his last outing in March. Cabrera faced Isaac Cruz in August the last time out and suffered his lone pro defeat as he dropped a 12-round split decision in a shot at the vacant WBC Latino Lightweight Belt and the WBC Silver Lightweight Title.

Zepeda vs Cabrera Betting Odds

Here are the betting odds from online sportsbook BetOnline.ag (full review here).

  • Giovanni Cabrera +1000
  • William Zepeda -2000

My Pick

The 28-year-old Zepeda is a southpaw who enters the ring with a perfect mark of 30-0 with 26 big Ko’s. He’s obviously made a name for himself due to his impressive power as he carries around a knockout ratio of 86.7 per cent. He’s boxed 135 rounds since making his pro debut in 2015 following his amateur career which saw him fight in the World Series of Boxing and has fought past six rounds just twice, which came in two of his last five outings against former world champions Rene Alvarado and Joseph Diaz.

Zepeda, who stands 5-feet-9-inches tall with a 69.5-inch reach, stepped up in class in those two fights and beat Diaz by a wide 12-round unanimous decision and Alvarado by a 10-round unanimous nod. His biggest wins before that came against the likes of Jose Fierros, Jesus Zazueta, Jose Rosales and Roberto Ramirez. Since turning pro, Zepeda won the vacant WBA Contintental Americas Lightweight Title in July, 2021 when he stopped Hector Tanajara after six rounds and defended it once by halting John Vincent Moralde in four rounds four months later. He’s also captured the vacant WBF Mexican Lightweight Title and the vacant WBC Fecarbox Silver Lightweight Crown

Cabrera is a 29-year-old relative unknown who makes the ring walk with a fine mark of 21-1 with 7 Ko’s. He has 145 rounds of experience under his belt since making his pro debut in 2016 following a brief amateur career and now fights out of Chicago. He measures 5-feet-9-inches tall with a 71-inch reach, which gives him a minimal 1.5-inch edge in reach over Zepeda.

Cabrera had never fought for any type of pro title and had met limited opposition until facing Isaac Cruz last July and he handled himself very well as he lost by scores of 114-113, 112-115 and 113-114. He’s taking another step up in class against Zepeda this weekend but he doesn’t have much in the way of power as just 31.8 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage and he’s gone the distance in his last six fights. His biggest wins have been against Tyron Harris, Ray Lampkin, Carlos Padilla, Headley Scott, Antonio Escalante, Luis Porozo, Rene Tellez Giron, Elias Damian Araujo and Gabriel Flores Jr.

Prediction…

Zepeda has plenty of power and to make him such a nightmare to face is the fact that he just keeps on throwing non-stop punches until the job is done. Cabrera will need a solid chin as he definitely doesn’t have the power to keep Zepeda off of him all night and Zepeda’s relentless punching will eventually prove to be too much for him. A win for Zepeda is the most likely scenario this Saturday night and it could also be by stoppage.

Zepeda’s non-stop leather attack should be the difference here.
