William Zepeda vs Tevin Farmer Preview March 29th, 2025

Unbeaten Interim WBC Lightweight Champion William Zepeda of Mexico returns to the ring to battle former IBF Super Featherweight Champion Tevin Farmer of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania this Saturday, March 29th. The fight from Cancun, Mexico is a rematch of their fight from last November which Zepeda win by a split decision 95-94, 95-94 and 94-95 despite being dropped in the fourth round. This weekend’s bout can be seen live in most nations on DAZN. Before their first tilt, Zepeda took care of Giovanni Cabrera in three rounds last July while Farmer dropped a 10-round unanimous decision to Raymond Muratalla in the same month in a shot at the NABA Lightweight Belt and the vacant WBO NABO Title.

My Pick

The 28-year-old Zepeda is a southpaw who enters the ring with a perfect mark of 32-0 with 27 big Ko’s. He’s obviously made a name for himself due to his impressive power as he carries around a knockout ratio of 84.4 per cent. He’s boxed 150 rounds since making his pro debut in 2015 following his amateur career which saw him fight in the World Series of Boxing and has fought past six rounds just three times as a pro. Those three contests came in his last seven outings against former world champions Rene Alvarado, Joseph Diaz and of course, Farmer.

Zepeda, who stands 5-feet-9-inches tall with a 69.5-inch reach, stepped up in class in those three fights and beat Diaz by a wide 12-round unanimous decision and Alvarado by a 10-round unanimous nod. His biggest wins before those came against the likes of Jose Fierros, Jesus Zazueta, Jose Rosales and Roberto Ramirez. Since turning pro, Zepeda has also won the vacant WBA Continental Americas Lightweight Title in July, 2021 when he stopped Hector Tanajara after six rounds and defended it once by halting John Vincent Moralde in four rounds four months later. He’s also captured the vacant WBF Mexican Lightweight Title and the vacant WBC Fecarbox Silver Lightweight Crown

The 33-year-old Farmer is also a southpaw who won the vacant IBF Super Featherweight title in August, 2018 via a unanimous decision over Billy Dib. He defended it against James Tennyson by fifth-round stoppage in October, by unanimous decision over Francisco Fonseca in December and by unanimous decision over Jono Carroll in March, 2019 before beating Guillame Frenois by unanimous decision. He then lost the belt to Joseph Diaz by unanimous decision six months later. He’s also beaten Maxi Hughes and Mercito Gesta.

Farmer originally fought for the vacant IBF Super Featherweight Title in December, 2017, but dropped a split decision to Kenichi Ogawa. Many fans and experts thought Farmer had done enough to win and the bout was later changed to a no-contest when Ogawa failed a drug test. Farmer stands 5-feet-6-inches tall with a 67-inch reach, so gives up three inches in height and 2.5-inches in reach to Zepeda. Farmer had a brief amateur career before turning pro in 2011. Since then he’s boxed 313 rounds and enters the bout with a record of 33-7-1 with just 8 Ko’s to his name.

After losing his pro debut when he was stopped in four rounds by Oscar Santana, Farmer then dropped a four-round unanimous decision to Josh Bowles eight months later and drew Frank De Alba in his next fight. Three fights later, Farmer lost an eight-round decision to Kamil Laszcyk before being stopped by Jose Pedraza in eight rounds in 2012. He didn’t give up though despite losing four and drawing one of his first 12 pro fights. Farmer then went on a 23-fight winning streak before losing to Diaz.

He hasn’t fought many world class contenders though with his best wins being over Tennyson, Avery Sparrow, Billy Dib, Ivan Redkach, Emanuel Gonzalez and Gamaliel Diaz. He lacks power as just 24.4 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage but he’s halted two of his past four opponents and dropped Zepeda. Of course, Zepeda know he can’t take him lightly because Farmer possesses fine boxing skills, a lot of hand speed and has deceptive power. Farmer’s improved a lot over the years and his chin isn’t bad at all even though he’s been stopped twice.

Prediction…

Zepeda has plenty of power and to make him such a nightmare to face is the fact that he just keeps on throwing non-stop punches until the job is done. However, Farmer withstood the barrage in the first fight and surprisingly dropped Zepeda in round four. Farmer has the better boxing skills but Zepeda’s relentless punching should eventually see him earn another win on points or stop Farmer in the later rounds. Once again, Farmer’s skills could frustrate Zepeda though but a win for Zepeda is still the most likely scenario this Saturday night.

Zepeda’s non-stop punching should be the difference here.
