NFL Betting in Florida – How To Bet Guide

By NFL

NFL games are very popular to bet on throughout the United States. This includes Florida, which is home to three NFL teams, the Jacksonville Jaguars, Miami Dolphins and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. NFL betting has really gone main stream in the past few years with betting odds such as the spread and total being main talking points leading into NFL games.

The Florida based NFL teams are struggling this season with the Jags, Dolphins and Bucs all having losing records after week 11 and the teams all looking in tough to make the playoffs.

On this page I will recommend our top rated betting site for Florida residents, touch on the regulatory climate of sports betting the state, look at examples of the three most common bets you can make on an NFL game, and finish with a simple 3 step guide you can follow to bet on the NFL online.

Sports Betting in Florida

Sports betting is legal in Florida. Hard Rock Bet is currently the only regulated betting site in Florida.

Sports betting was initially legalized in Florida in 2021, but Hard Rock Bet was forced to pull out of the state late in that same year after a court ruling vacated the 2021 Florida gaming compact between Florida and the Seminole Tribe. The ruling was appealed, and on June 30th, 2023 the Court of Appeals ruled in favor of the Seminole Tribe, which means sports betting is once again legal in Florida. Hard Rock Bet then relaunched in December of 2023.

Florida residents are also able to place bets through offshore betting sites that are licensed and regulated outside of the United States. BetOnline.ag falls into this category, as they are located and licensed in Panama, while accepting US players from everywhere in the country, including Florida.

NFL Betting Options

There are three popular NFL bets that are typically featured for each game. These are the spread, money line (to win) and total (over/under). Below I will look at each of these bets using the Jacksonville Jaguars vs Miami Dolphins game from earlier this season for the examples.

Spread

The spread is the most common bet on NFL games. The point spread is meant to even the playing field between the two teams so their is a perceived equal possibility of either outcome.

The favored team must win by more than the spread, while the underdog must either win the game outright or lose by fewer points than the spread.

In this example, the Miami Dolphins are 3 point favorites at home to the Jaguars. This is indicated by the (-3) spread odds for the Dolphins. Miami must win by 4 or more points to cover the spread.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are 3 point underdogs (+3) which means they must either win the game outright or lose by 2 or fewer points to “beat the spread”.

If the Dolphins win by exactly 3 points then the spread bets would push.

Money Line (Win)

You can also simply wager on which team will win the game. This type of bet is called the money line. The money line odds are set based on each teams perceived chances of winning the game. A bet on the underdog would win more than a bet on the favorite.

The money line odds determine your risk vs reward.

In this example the Dolphins are -164 favorites to win the game. You would have to risk $164 to win $100 betting on Miami.

The Jaguars are +144 underdogs, so risking $100 would win $144 if they pulled off the upset.

Total (Over/Under)

The other popular bet is wagering on the total number of points to be scored in the game. The oddsmaker will set a “total” and you can bet on if the amount of points scored in the game will be over or under that amount.

In this example the total is set at 49. If 50 or more points are scored the over bets would win. If 48 or fewer points are scored under bets would win. If exactly 49 points are scored the bets would push.
